Went for a ride...

Yea , If I recall right it was 3 posn . Had the worlds most sophisticated wiring loom , a esy grands worth , for nix as a favour . Earths for everything , relays for everything , all the correct colour codes and fittings ,
Worthy of the Sheik of Araby . :) We Shall Say No More .

But if you see one of those roatary switches like that with the side grooves , avoid it , give it a wide berth ,, RUN . Or dismantle & inspect it if you must use it .

COILS ! #^%* etc . Junk Yard coils - 90 % lucas ( car ) over 10 years old were pathetic under test , if they worked . HALF the Sports Coils ( second hand ) were unserviceable .
even IF one lookede brand new , it meant nothing . But good ones did tend to be unbattered . The odd one ( had or did ) burst . Stall parking & leave the ign ON with the contact breakers circuit unbroken
for 20 or 30 minutes .
If its only 15 itllve melted or deteriorated the wire shellack , so its useless - some time when your not wanting that .

Some twist the bakelite contact end , weeping or emptying . The oil inside is to COOL it. That should tell you something . It Generates HEAT . thats why theyre up in the wind , and water .

ANY F.B. Deleteve coil SHOULD throw a 1/2 in BLUE & WHITE spark , 15 millimeters is a LOT better . 3/8 ( 10 mm ) is how small is your willie ! pathetic , as is red/ yellow spark .
Your Granny would even have trouble with here Morrie Thou there .

A Auto Electric repair garrage should have a big electric thing the plug ( removed 0 coils into , and twist knobs and buttons and OBSERVE its capeabilities and faults . There not all robbers .
Its a tuppany test if you bring the removed coils in yourself .
Remembering most have crimp / swage lines along the case from where someones tightened the clamp screw to stop them going somewhere with vibration . on a Commando ! ? . :?

Poor earths from Paint Under the Earth Wire end fittings has been know to cause the odd spot of bother .
as does unfirm spade terminals & carbon ( supressed ) plug leads .
Most turkeys immediately fitted copper core plug leads to there S/H Triumps as soon as they got them , to cure the missfire and s*^# um erratic IDLE .

It's not necessarily electrical, check the inlet manifold insulation gaskets are installed. If not, fuel boils and motor stops, fuel cools and motor runs.

They're there. This ain't my first rodeo.

Installed new switch, fired it up rode down the road a couple of miles. Seems ok at this point.

that is the best breakdown story in history (excluding a playboy letter to the editor story.... which I am pretty sure are fiction) regarding the coil discussion I put volkswagon beetle coils on my 850 back in 95. I could hold the plug wire 4 inches away from the plug and it would idle perfectly. Death to the Prince of Darkness. But now I am running a Tri spark setup. Sounds like your problems are clearing up. good luck

Ran it up to 90 indicated in 3rd gear today. I still hear an occasional hiccup when cruising. Fixed a broken horn wire inside the headlight shell. Must have cut a bit deep when originally stripping the wire.
