VM36 plus what filter

This is for a friend...
Has a new VM36 on his 850 Mk3 that has an air filter that is ridiculously small - smaller than the each of those I have on my FCR35s (it came in a kit from the Australian Mikuni agent)
All the older threads on air filter selection appear to be at least 7 years old so - what is the best & biggest air filter that will fit on a Mikuni VM36?
I did a scan through the K&N website and see the following as possiblilities.
The VM36 has a 62mm spigot at the rear of the carb and if we take filter dimensions as A = front height (as mounted), B = Width and C = length (front of element to rear).

Smallest - RU-2780 A=114mm, B=95mm, C=70mm
RU-3780 A=114mm, B=95mm, C=89mm
RE-0961 A=114mm, B=95mm, C=102mm
RE-0960 A=114mm, B=95mm, C=152mm
RC-3680 A=114mm, B=95mm, C=152mm

Any better that these? Obviously the biggest that will fit will be best. The last two appear to be tight but may fit with a bit of "fettling".
What do you have fitted?

On a MKII with a single VM36 I have a K&N RC-0850 on it, and it just slips on/off with a bit of wiggling with the carb installed.
Have to take into account the filter flange length as well to fit it with the carb installed.

MK lll using the K&N RC 0850 as well .

Has anyone used a K&N RE-0960 - It's a 114 x 95 mm oval and 152mm long?
It looks like it will fit and has about three times the cloth area of the RC-0850 (mentioned above) - so, that's got to be a good thing.
Any experience or comments?
