Several people have asked me how well a Norton starts and idles with flatside carbs. So I made the video below. The carbs in the video have not been adjusted for over 6 monthes of riding.

This bike has a new Joe Hunt magneto with the new & powerful rare earth magnets and the motor explodes to life about 1/2 way through the kick start. I'm very happy with these new magnetos. There is no battery - you don't need one. Very tidy and dependable. They fit the Atlas style cases best (behind the cylinders) with automatic advance. Otherwise they have to mount at the points cover for Commandos and then you just have fixed advance timing.

Braggart! but glad of it. Try it by hand, might find its a pussy cat to do too.

I kicked it 5 times just to show that it starts every kick. It usually starts 1st or 2nd kick when the engine is cold - but only in the summer. In winter its the usual several kicks with the enrichening knobs pulled up until the juice starts flowing.

There is no way it will start by hand - I have gapless rings in those lightweight pistons and resistance is high - it doesn't want to leak down - you can stand on the kickstart for a minute. So it takes a firm kick.

After years of lucas mags and amals - kicking & cussing & bump starting it up & down the street - yeah there is something to brag about.

Gotta love Hunt mags; I consider that the second best ignition out there, with the ARD mini-mag (no longer available) at the top.

I also very much like the PWKs, just need more experience installing & dialing in all the various combinations.

I know the '53 T-Bird chopper that I just sold to a New Zealander is a one-kick starter and ticks over nice and easy every time with the single PWK & Hunt mag. Cruising at 70, it'll pass cars with just a blip of the throttle.

Hi all

Yes I love the new Joe Hunt maggies, I have had mine on my 850 Norton for 9 months now and haven't had any problems with it, except when I had to lay the bike down on the hunt side but only broke the top cover had a spare one from my mate, it starts mostly first kick, but for some reason when poeple are watching it some times takes 2 to 3 kicks, funny how that happens, it is so easy to set up and once tuned it stay tuned and it works good with my Amals carbs.

You can see in the photo that the manifolds are extended for more ram effect. To get clearance I had to make a cutout in the Atlas oiltank and the filters rub - so I use foam filters which won't damage anything. Clearance is too tight for anything else.

Its kind of unfortunate that Norts went away from the magneto in my opinion. It they had used a better mag than the Lucas they could have kept it. It is old school and the points need replacing once a year but the new Hunt rare earth magnets really work well. I tried to get one of the earlier pointless ARD units or the mini mag and even tried to persuade the maker to get on it but to no avail. Its weird - he has a patent on it and could sell a bunch but nothing is happening. He would sell the rights if someone would pick up the ball.

What's his name?

ARD magnetos

made by Allan D'alo

If you find him, you may get a lot of positive talk but I doubt anything will happen - unless you buy the patent and go for it.

Search of the USPTO comes up with nothing for that name. Does he put a patent number on the products?

ARD magnetos

I only "heard" that he has a patent. When I talked to him he was considerings selling it or selling the rights to someone who would make it. I called him a few times then gave up rather than keep bothering him. Couldn't get him to make any or come up with an older version of a hunt style but without the points.

Back when he would have gotten a patent it would have been a pain in the ass to find out the patent information. Nowadays it's a couple clicks on the interweb.

I'm saying he did this but you can claim to have a patent just to keep people from stealing it, but never get one.

One could conceivably take the ARD mag to China and have it knocked off in a couple weeks. Then sell as many as you can before this guy even knows about it. Immoral? Definitely, but with all the bobber junkies out there you could sell a shitload in very short time.

Or you could build something similar, perhaps an electronically triggered magneto instead of CDI-based. Anything self-contained and self-powered would work.
