What size/type of rental van would be right for driver/passenger/two Norton sized bikes with appropriate tie-downs?

LOL... True! :)

UK - planning for the Manx GP next year, taking our bikes on the Liverpool Ferry rather than flying from Bristol/hiring bikes for a week/10 days. Sadly, no Nortons involved. It would be a 1976 Honda 400 Four and a current Kawasaki Z900RS Cafe.

I would think that you would be able fit those two bikes in a standard size van like a E150, you may need to stagger or off set them a bit. A couple of wheel chocks might make things easier. Sounds like a fun trip.

IMHO you would be better off with a van a little too big, rather than a little too small.

Sounds like you’ll have riding gear, other luggage, etc. as well.

A long wheel base, semi high top, Ford Transit, or equivalent would be far more suited to the task in my experience.

The advice to use a couple of front wheel chocks is also good, not strictly necessary, but it makes the job a lot easier, especially if you’re not too familiar with transporting bikes in this way, and it reduces the risk of damage significantly.

OP, what is your rigging skillset?
Clever use of both cam type & ratchet straps will allow close proximity without failure.
