I'll be rebuilding a couple cylinder heads this winter (Triumph and BSA), and I've never been a fan of the pound and drift guide installation method, so I took inspiration from Comnoz's rig (https://www.accessnorton.com/NortonCommando/valve-guide-install.13785/), though my version isn't hydraulic, instead it mounts into my mill which has got 2" of spindle travel.

The column is a simple taper that accommodates various valve seat sizes, and the pilot is tapered to locate in standard to oversize guide bores, and is spring loaded in the column (going into the column as the guide is pressed down). Once the head is mounted with the pilot located in the guide bore the guide is slipped onto the pilot up top, there's a drift that gets installed in the spindle that locates on the guide flange, press down and voila!

Nice work

I rebuilt my t160 last winter, like you I am not a fan of beating new guides into place so I put this hand crank fitting tool together it's not as cool as yours but it worked. I had to move into my Kitchen workshop next to the heat source for final assembly.

Cool, how quickly did the heat dissipate across that head?

I decided to "ere on the side of caution" the guides I received measured up at the high end of tolerance so I maxed the oven up to 220 c gave the head 30 minuets to heat up, fitted 2 guides then put the head back in the oven for ten minuets and so on . Make sure you you have suitable gloves at the ready.
