I have a wheel hub that I have been trying to identify. I have been informed it is a garden gate Manx front hub, it is conical with 3 or 4 fins, 8 inch, made of steel, no flange on the bottom of taper, spokes straight into hub. 40 spoke. I don't have a brake plate. what would it be worth. probably better to sell and buy something not so rare. I am not able to post pics at the moment. pictures are on other forums. thanks N

I'm no Manx expert by any means or stretch of anyone's imagination.

Don't know what year it started, but Manx bikes used to come equipped with magnesium hubs. If it's the case on yours, then as a dependable, operable part, I'd say it's worthless without being crack tested. Magnesium embrittles with age (actually exposure to elements, but there's not really that much difference), and whatever coating is on it must be complete to disallow the corrosion.

If it's proven to be without cracks, whether aluminum or magnesium, run it if you want it. The baby Jesus didn't win the TT on it (He mostly rode Velocettes), so the resale value isn't going to set your family up for a life of leisure, so who cares? It's just a motorcycle part.

Ha! You said "made of steel"! I'm no reading expert as it turns out either.

Again, if it's good shape, run it if you want it. There are fewer and fewer people who care about these bikes, and values are nosediving. Don't sweat it.
