I have the 74 850 roadster. At first it would not start so i cleaned the carb, put a little fuel in the plugs and it started on the 17th kick. I thought I was done. A quick test ride around the block proved otherwise...

It was impossible to upshift after I hit 3rd gear.

So I took apart the gearbox. I felt like I was almost in the club after I got the layshaft bearing out. That was a ton of fun (sarcasm). Now I'm rebuilding the whole box, even though I cleaned it up and rebent the very bent spring. It shifted well after that, but I could not leave it at that (addiction). Now Im waiting for all the parts/tools to arrive and cleaning all the bits. What solvent do you guys use?? Ive heard gasoline, paint thinner. Can I use the same carb dipping berryman solution on all the parts gears, shafts, springs, pawl and other gearbox components/pieces??
Excluding any rubber of course.

I replaced the clutch with the barnet from old brit. I will comment on this when i get some time in the saddle!

It looks like the top end had a total rebuild, so im not going there just yet.

I sent the brake parts to old britts to get their master cylinder, rotor and caliper. That old one was not so hot.

Im getting the low english bars too.

My question is what else do i need to check/replace on a 74 850?? I plan on redoing the suspension as needed. Basically im asking what are some notorious problems?

Did the '74 come with a fiberglass tank? I have my suspicions about its authenticity. There are two connectors where a seat is supposed to fit, but my seat which seems stock, does not have the connection, and there is a small 2cm gap btw seat and tank. How was the original paint, was the norton painted on or were decals used. Please excuse all beginner questions!

Thats all for now. Ive enjoyed the process so much, and the forum has been so valuable. The internet makes so much possible. I would of torn my hair out with just the manuals. I take my hat off to the guys who did it without the internet!! cheers, Rob

Should have been steel by '74.

There are no seat connections on any tank? Certain F/glass tanks have two lugs at the rear but they are for the tank retaining band.[12]

F/glass tank "paint" was the gelcoat. Steel tanks had a painted finish.

Usually self-adhesive decals (except for the early 68-69 "Fastback"model).

Better check your isolastics and re-shim. Likely will need that.

Better check the exhaust nuts at the head and make sure they are good, tight, and not stripped.

Better check your exhaust system rubber mounts. If they are original they should be replaced. If they break, you can easily and quicly crack your exhaust pipes.

Better take every electrical connection apart, clean, dielectric grease, and re-connect (this is a must)

Better put on a new drive chain

Better put on new tires

Better drain the oil and fill with new along with new filter, should flush out the oil tank first.

Better clean the engine sump screen.

Better lube the tach and speedo drive cables

Better lube the speedo drive

Better put in a new air filter.

Better check the cam chain tension

You make it seem like running a Norton is maintenance heavy? Doesn't the dealer do these things when I bring it in for the oil change?

That was sarcasm
