It would perhaps if the TR came with the US-spec carbys, but if it has sorted fuel injection (pumps used to overheat), then it's 150HP of fun.

The Z's roof doesn't lift off! The TR has a removable hard-top.

The z s were spiffy little cars, but unfortunately in this area ( BC Coast) they all rusted away to nothing way back in the 80s.

A good friend in Seattle bought one of the early 240Zs. It was a great car and wasn't strangled by the emission rules back then. IMO, the 260 was a troublesome beast because of all the kludges that were needed to meet the emissions requirements. Our eldest daughter bought one, but gave up on it after a string of mechanic bills trying to get it to run well. Having an automatic transmission didn't enhance it much either!

My dad had a 240Z which I think he bought as a demo - great fun car. Lovely wood steering wheel. He used to race my uncle in his Lotus Europa. He would also take all of the family out in it - him and mom in the front, us three kids in the back with our legs hanging down behind the front seats and me (oldest at 12) hunched down. Good times.

Wouldn't a Datsun 260Z be better ?
It probably would, and a '74 Honda 750 UJM is probably arguably a better motorcycle than a '74 Commando. I've owned a handful of 4-wheeled Triumphs in the past, and they will definitely test your tolerance for punishment. But, and feel free to call me crazy here, I'm seriously thinking of turning my '01 Honda S2000 into a nice TR4 driver come this spring or summer.

I've owned several 4 wheel Triumphs aswell, most notable a 74 TR6 FI with Bosche fuel pump , it was a great car and I even liked it's oddities like squirming off the line. The one thing it needed was power steering, which I guess would be no big deal to fit these days. Reason for selling was a lack of use, If I was out in it, I'd invariably go home and get a bike out.
The problem now at least in the UK is I'm priced out of the market. Oh well never mind.

As for owning a Datsun 240/260 , I'd rather stick pins in my eyes, yes they probably are great but I couldn't care less

My Commando is always a more satisfying ride than say my 2015 Tiger. The Tiger is hugely capable, and I use it for serious distance stuff, but the Commando always gives me a memorable ride. Similarly, I've an early MX5 (Miata) and that's a much more involving drive than my much newer Subaru. So yeah, Bill, I see where you're coming from.

Having said that, it seems the prices of 240 and 260Zs are set to climb rapidly as the market is starting to take a fancy to them. If you've got an old banger lurking in the garage, it might be worth digging it out and freshening it up a bit.

I think that a good part of an old Triumph's charm is that you can scare yourself pretty good without worrying about getting a speeding ticket. And actually, they did have an early version of power steering. Big diameter steering wheels.
