Does anyone know if it’s possible to retain the original registration of an old bike in the U.K. if the bike has been off the road since pre DVLA computer days and there is no paperwork with it, meaning no old log book or tax discs etc?

I‘ve been told that in such circumstances, it’s not possible to retain the original number and an age related number will be allocated instead. Is this correct?

You need documentary evidence to support reissue of the old reg, even then it may have been reused. So age related it is, the only way out is if by luck the old council pre DVLA records have been archived, then you can ask for them to send you a copy of the records, but you need the reg number and the records to exist. You may need more than the reg number, a date of first registration would cut down the effort in the search.

An example

and a happy story
