I want to put a set of BMW R60/2 bar end turn signals on my Atlas...I live in seattle, the traffic is thick. Since turn signals didn't come into the picture until about 1970 the switch assembly looks too modern and bulky on the Atlas. Was there any other motorcycle made before 1970 with turn signals that have a very small handlebar switch?
I am looking for something small and compact about the same thing as the small chrome headlight dip/horn switch found on many British bikes.

You could use an Atlas dip switch to select Right/Left function. The flasher function must be done somewhere else.

My Atlas dip/horn/kill switch uses brass posts, to which attach the various wires. The lever has a roller which bridges two posts, completing a circuit. IIRC, the switch has four posts. For illustration, consider the posts to be located at 1, 2, 3, 4 o'clock.

Connect left signals to 1 o'clock post, the right signals to 4 o'clock post, connect flasher interrupted power to both 2 and 3 o'clock posts. This will give you a center off position.

I will find a switch and investigate the wiring. I usually wire a flasher into the power coming INTO the switch then the pulsing on/off goes through the switch ...any difference whether the flasher is before or after the switch?
There are two very common British handlebar switches...one is a roundish thing with a chrome button (horn or kill) on top. The other is a small chrome box. Which one are you talking about?

Mine is round with a horn button in the center, and a kill button on the bottom side.

I would wire it exactly as you say you usually do. It can be made to work with the flasher before or after the switch, but if I were doing it, I would find a place for the flasher, likely in the headlight shell, then run power inside the bars to the switch (posts 2,3 as in my post above), then to each signal lamp.

If your signal lamps can use an 1157 lamp, there are some LED 1157 equiv. that are self flashers. These would simplify the installation. The 1157 seems like a gross overkill ..... perhaps there are 9 mm bayonet LED's that are self flashers.

I am going to use the original Bmw bar end turn signal, can't remember the brand name right now. It uses a strange tube - shaped bulb that I hope comes in an LED.

The Norton Electra 400 comes to mind (actually a bike designed and manufactured by AMC at Plumstead, first models launched 1963). It had Hella bar end turn signals, just as the BMW. I am not sure how the switch arrangement was , but this shouldn't be hard to come by. Probably a switch made by Wipac. You could fit the switch fitted on the BMW.

I finally found a switch from a mid 60's honda cb. Very simple and small. That will do.

Now just make them self cancelling for added safety :)

LOL!

@Seattle

I would like to see pics of the bar end lamps. I have been considering this mod myself, as I have come to believe no one these days knows what an extended left arm forming a square means.

Also, what did you use for a flasher?

I used a common flasher from the auto parts store. I could send you a picture to your email, due to low computer skills I cannot post to this forum.
