Turn signal indicator

Today I took my bike out for a ride and it only has 61 miles on it. Has anyone had a issue with the turn signal indicator on the gauge face not working? The turn signals themselves work, just not the indicator. It worked fine yesterday pulling into my driveway, today I take it out and right off the bat it didn't work. But it is intermittent. I pushed and tugged on the wires going into the headlight bucket but nothIng. Any ideas?
Thanks Scott.

Well, looks like 26 views but no response. I'll start taking it apart tomorrow and see if I can find the problem. Hopefully it's just a loose connection. It works when I turn the handle bars left but not in the straight or to the right.

Are you able to open the instrument making a voltage test? Do you have the 961 wiring diagram?

Cheers

Bernhard

Yep I know how to do a voltage test. I'm a ASE auto mechanic. But this is the very first bike I ever owned and I do not have a wiring schematic. I'm pretty sure the problem is inside the tach because that's where the turn signal indicator is. When I turn the turn signals on, the indicator will illuminate when I have the handle bars turned left or straight ahead, but when I turn slightly to the right or full lock to the right the indicator does not work at all. So I'm pretty sure it's a loose connection.

Take the cluster off and look for loose wires is all I can suggest. I have a manual on that. There is a trick with the gasket upon re-assembly. But if you can turn one way and it doesn't work, then look for where any wires are being pulled when turning that way. Kind of narrow it down.

Yep. I did all that before I posted on here. I'll let you all know what I find.

Try the fuse box perhaps? Flasher is there too. I'm not all that great with electronics -- sorry.

Since I never had the bike apart yet and SBN never sent me my owners manual I don't know where the fuse panel is. This is the last time I'll buy a bike from SBN.

Hello Voodooo , The fuse box is in the rear cowling behind the seat. There is a grey plastic box in there and that is the fuses and relays box. I would have guessed based on your symtoms that it is a wire connector being stretched or pulled when you turn the bars. I wouldn't expect a fuse in the back seat. You may have to pull the gas tank to get a better look at things . Somewhere around the steering neck/headlamp shell or under the tank. The bike is too new for a breaking wire (but you never know) so probably a connector getting pulled. I had a problem recently where the tip over sensor wire was nearly pulled off its connection and I was down . But once that was found and the poor connection rectified no problem since. Richard said he did a manual about the instrument cluster and it is good. I have put in a headlamp modulator (headlight pulser) recently and the inside of the headlamp bucket is not too bad to work on. I can scan in the electrical schematic if you need it just PM me your email address and I will pdf it to you. There is a mod that involves using foam and tyraps to secure the plugs into the fuse and relay box . Look at some of the images on the site , iwilson has a good image of it. This is a good time to do a little waterproofing as well on those connections.

Correct I agree it's in the steering and pulling on the wiring. Not the fuse. The turn signals themselves work fine it's just the indicator in the tach.
My email is Dipstick3@yahoo.com

One last question, when I remove the fuel tank will it drain the tank empty? On the cars I work on that do not have a return fuel line the supply fuel line has a one way check valve and when disconnect will not drain the system.

This is correct , The fuel should not run out of the tank when you disconnect the fuel line. Richard did a fuel tank removal manual and shows where the release button is on the fuel tank connector and fasteners holding the tank . All of the manuals are available for no cost at the Colorado Norton Works web site.

Be sure to check inside the instrument itself , There are several plugs/connectors in there.

Well I just got home from work and took the carbon fiber headlight fairing off and removed the back of the tach gauge and found a broken wire that is completely severed. This really sucks. Id rather replace the harness instead of repair it since the bike is brand new. Not sure how to get my hands on one of these.

Update.
I removed the headlight fairing, and tach cup and found their are two plugs in the tach. One plug has one black wire for the turn signal indicator. Following that "one black" wire down into the loom it "Y's" off into two wires. One for the left turn and one for the right turn signal. This is where my wire was broken from a poor crimp connection. I soldered the wire back into the "Y" and shrink tubed it. Better then new.

Lol. I heard British bikes were Notorious for electrical issues in the days when they used Lucas parts. By the way, how do I post pictures on this forum?

You need to use a picture posting site like photobucket . I use photobucket and it is free to set up an account. You upload your images to photobucket , then you can copy and post them to the forum website . There is a tutorial somewhere if you search for it.

So that's the reason it is so easy?!

Yup. I had enough crap and passwords to deal with in one lifetime. Just pay and easy peasy. Besides, this forum is well worth it.
