it has the roadster tank, so i think its the 'R ' type

Yes, it could be an 'R' type.

is it anything special,

Only a few hundred or so 'R's were made but they're not that rare it seems as we had an enquiry about what appears to be another 'R' recently.

what does the P mean?

'P' supposedly to signifies the engine was built at the AMC Plumstead factory.

thank you for the info, my friend just got this bike and doesn't know much of its history , we are in New Zealand, i have 4 nortons , 1x 1972 750, 2x 1973 850 and 1x 1974 850, love nortons. he wants sell it but wanted to know what he had first, i don't know if the value is much in the condition it is in, its rough but most parts are there and needs a restore, does run , though roughly

Dave, where are you at? I am in AKL.

Have you tried Andover Norton they have the factory records for the Commando's, They had it on my 68' and even which dealer it went to and colour was really handy to confirm it was green at new :)

Granite, if you are going to the rally next weekend I will be on my Feb. 1969 20M3 Fastback which is just over 600 numbers later than the bike that you were enquiring about.

My ‘69 750 S was built at the Plumstead factory, but the 20M3S does not have a “P”. Does that mean the engine came from a different factory? Possibly Plumstead didn’t assemble 20M3S engines? Build date of my machine is 12 Mar 1969 according to Andover Norton records. Likely built in the first week of production of 750 S.

No further information has come to light since our previous discussions, unfortunately.
