Tritons

There is no "wrong" on a Triton.

Each and every one is unique, and what it's maker decided on, whether out of desire, or necessity.

I notice in the pictures that you have the rocker boxes fitted with the oil feed on the left hand side.

As standard, Triumphs always had the feed on the right hand side.

Under normal circumstances, it does no matter at all. But, it made me wonder, have you inadvertently fitted the inlet rocker's, complete with the offset buttons (giving greater lift) in the exhaust side?!?

Hi Nigel,
I can’t remember why the rocker boxes were reversed. I'll see if the offset buttons are still mounted. If I actually start the 840ccm project again, I would be grateful for your technical advice. 75hp are already an announcement. Great photo, thanks.

Frank, I’d be happy to share my entire knowledge... it won’t take long !!

Whereabouts in Germany are you? I’m occasionally in Stuttgart, are you near there?

Pre-unit Tritons have a bit of history which almost makes them authentic as an historic bike. But in actual fact a pre-unit Triton can never handle as good as a genuine Manx. And a Triton with a unit motor is hopeless at speed in any bend. The weight distribution is ridiculous and the gap behind the gearbox is horrible. The theory was 'a good motor in the best frame' - good in theory, but not in practice. In a road race, a genuine 500cc Manx with usually trounce any 650cc Triton. I have raced a Triton against 1963 Bonnevilles - they were a much better bike than a Triton. One of those, done properly is a real gem.

Al, you clearly haven’t actually looked at the pictures of Franks bike. There is no ridiculous gap behind the gearbox.

The frame is a one off, designed around the engine. The geometry is basically the same as a Dresda (can’t recall exact figures). It is essentially a Dresda frame made to look like a Manx. The Dresda frame copied the geometry of the racing Aermacchi.

There are very little comparisons with a pre unit Triton. Especially your old death trap 500.

Nigel,
that sounds really great. Unfortunately I‘m living in the Cologne area, 285 miles away from Stuttgart. But....I visit my family every 4-5 weeks in Stuttgart. Maybe we can meet there once.
I put all the 840ccm parts into a box and we discuss what it is to do. My engeneering skill is limited but usable when I get advice.
