Transmission vent kit.

Just a nod in the direction of CNW whom supplied me with a vent kit. Great product, well made and easy to fit if you follow the guide supplied by Richard 7.

A very worth while and NEEDED mod. Those not running a vent will eventually get leaks caused by pressure building up in the trans/primary. Even my Ford truck has a vent in the differential/rear axle housing . The vintage Commando even had a small vent hole in the trans fill/inspection cap. Those of you who don't run a trans/primary vent should perform this test : When you change trans oil next time , remove the trans drain plug only and watch how SLOWLY the oil comes out . Then quickly break loose the fill plug and watch it FLOW out ! If that doesn't convince you then nothing will ! Sorry to say. Richard you can't say I didn't try .

Yes ditto , I've done 10,000 miles now ,vent kit been on since 2,000 mile,s , have no leaks anywhere ,thanking Richard 7 & dad again.

Why do you suppose that that tiny hole in insufficient to vent the trans? Doesn't the temp rise and fall slowly?

Hello , You are not reading my post correctly. What I wrote was that the Vintage Commando (1969 to 1975) has the vent hole in the trans fill cap... I don't refer to the 961 as the Vintage Commando . I hope that is clear now.

I'm not talking 961.

Just asking why a standard Commando's pin hole vent (the one in the fill cap) is inadequate, given that the rise and fall of temperature in the gear box is slow and that there is a good volume of free air above the gear lube as well.

If you are asking if the pinhole would work on a 961 like it does on a vintage bike, the answer is yes absolutely. It would relieve the pressure and prevent the pressure leaks. It however would not be Euro 4 compliant as you would be venting to open air. Some would say that it would let water in but it didn't back in the day!
