transmission drain repair

I did this quick repair by tapping the stripped hole with 1/8" NPT (tapered thread) and using a 1/8" NPT threaded brass plug.
The NPT 27 thread-per-inch is very close to the 26 tpi of the original size.
Very little chips created when tapping and the plug has a nice torque feel when tightening. I did it without disassembling the gearbox, but did refill with clean oil. I use ATF now.

There are probably better ways, but this way needed very little down time.
Good luck.

The gearbox drain plug is 3/8" X 20 (British) but the crankcase is 3/8" X 16 (US).

In North America it is going to be easier to find a kit for repairing the 3/8 X 16 threads with a Helicoil or Timesert. Just an idea, and you would end up with a magnetic plug in the crankcase.

The drain plug is rather short, sometimes you can use a "longer" 3/8 bsf bolt with success. It is worth a try. I did this years ago, and it is still working.
