I pulled my outer trans cover off to tighten the clutch release lever ring. On reassembly I had a hard time getting the gear change to work. The gear lever would move but not engage any gear. I did nothing to disturb the ratchet assembly at all. The only way I got everything to work was to put the trans in first and align the pawl plate pin with the knuckle roller using the bolt that holds the indicator pointer in the end of the splined shaft. Any attempt to do it in neutral or a higher gear would not work. I've had this cover off numerous times in the past and don't ever remember having this kind of trouble. What the hell was I missing that I didn't find in any of the manuals or Oldbritts tech articles?

That pawl spring is probably worn or you moved it changing the dynamics of it, its a real pain to get right.

Its probably the pawl which needs to be centered between the top and bottom rung of the spring when fitting up to the inner cover.
As stated in post #2 it can be a real pain. Try setting the shift lever in 4th gear then offer up the outer cover to the inner while keeping an eye on the pawl to be centered between the lower dog leg run and the upper of the pawl spring. a good flashlight helps.
good luck.
cheers,
Tom
