TonyA's Engine Rebuild

To add to this... this isnt an attack on Norton or Simon. Tony wants to make his bike better. Blue print and balance. He will share his experience for others to learn from. So don’t everyone get worried. My dad is teaching Tony so in the future, he will be able to work on his own bike. Teach a man to fish type thing. Anyone is welcome to follow in his footsteps. My dad loves to teach and lives Nortons. And if you want to learn to work on your own bike, then you’re more than welcome to take his class.
Sure that if I make it once to Canada I will visit the Coote‘s and thank you personally for your helpful advices!

So I'll leave it to here and let Tony continue with what happened after this photo.

To be Cont....

Hello , I am happy to report there was no problems with my engine. We did find the crankshaft walk out to a maximum of .0045 inches . This was brought down to less than .001 inches by David Coote. While apart we treated the engine to genuine FAG main bearings and balance shaft bearings.

It’ll be nice knowing that you know Tony! And nice having the knowledge you’ve gained.

It’s also nice (esp for the rest of us) to know that you didn’t find any howlers in there!

So, exactly when does the super charger get fitted .... ?

M M was a good engine builder . Whoever he or she was/is. My clutch basket is in good shape too. There are many little upgrades that David Coote has developed to improve things. One is on that shift shaft pictured above. ALSO , he can provide a upgrade starter service for your 961. We also discussed doing other mods like porting and better engine venting. Its been a great week , not quite done yet . !

Tony,

Did you ride the 961 to Dave's place or trailer it?
Did you or Dave check the rocker bushing?
Any signs of oil starvation or damage to the bushings?

I trailered the bike to Dave's' Place.

We both checked the rocker bushings and shafts.

There was some very slight scuffing , I will post pictures .

Should the clutch basket be able to move at all by hand?

I get about 3-4mm.

Trying to illustrate that we are running two exhaust port sealing rings per port. Install first , crush , then install the second . do not over tighten the exhaust port nuts. The nuts will jam on the non thread portion of stud . Do not exceed factory torque spec. My First run with O2 sensors eliminated and resistor plugs installed. Took about a 50 mile ride and good so far. The engine is much smoother and stronger. So several things have been done at the same time.

1. Crank Trued
2. Balance shaft checked (was OK )
3. Main bearings replaced with genuine FAG brass cage roller type
4. Balance shaft bearings repalaced with genuine FAG brass cage roller and SKF Heavy duty ball
5 . Transmission outer plate bearings replaced .
6. Camshaft left hand bearing replaced.
7. My ECU Map could not be verified with the computer . SO ,we installed 077 - 0116 for SC ECU Afternarket Map
8. Piston rings replaced with new Norton Factory Rings and Gaps spaced properly .
