Timingl light question

This might be a dumb question, but I have been adjusting the timing on my MKIII Commando (stock - no digital ignition :) ) My inductive timing light works fine and pretty stable, but somebody told be that the standard spark plug wire might cause problems, because it was simple solid core or something? Should I worry about this? The ignition was too advanced (atleast 4-5 degrees) when I first read it, which I found odd since I had no problems with kick-back on starting.

I think the somebody thought you might need resister wires, but you have standard points set up so no

As for the overly advanced timing, the main concern is the onset of pre-ignition/detonation with today's lousy petrol. Even if you run high-test, the engine needs to have the plugs firing at the correct time. Anything earlier and/or later will only cause grief and reduced power output. Case in point; most big-block engines run 4-5 more degrees of advance as compared to their small-block counterparts. This is in direct relation to how far the flame front has to travel from the plug to the edge of the bore, since you want combustion to complete just as the piston reaches TDC. A larger bore requires the plugs to fire earlier to make this happen. So, unless you have any internal mods, especially combustion chamber work done, set it to factory and stay away from low octane fuel.
