Boyer, new Amals, compression (not great but its working); still farting flames at start up and for the next 10 mins. The right side is running sweet. Port side isn't firing until hot hot hot.
Is it all about timing? Or start my search elsewhere?

It sounds to me like a fouled plug or a very lean mixture on one side.
What does the plug look like on the bad side?
Have you tried a different plug on that side and does it repair it at least temporarily?

Do you have a tight gasket joint to the head? Also, the idle circuit may be partially plugged with grease as another poster found.

Its possible the trigger leads reversed or something messing mechanically with the magnets coil clearance.

+1 on the lean mixture. 1/4 turn in on the mixture screw and it starts up right away and runs great. And it sounds awesome; the neighbours complain, dogs barking, car alarms going off ... love it.

Finally, after 1 1/2 years I feel the engine and gear box is well sorted. Now onto the clutch drag issue.

A while back I took my bike to the local raceway after it had been standing for a long time, and it wouldn't start. One of the local 'experts' decide I needed help, so reset the idle screws by counting the prescribed number of turns out from fully closed. I simply watched him do it, his intentions were good. After I found a plug spanner and a couple of plugs, I started the bike , handed my offsider the screw driver and told him to reset the idle screws until he got the miss then back off. It is not rocket science.
