I need to install my reed breather (thank you for reminding me Bernhard).

Will be located on the blanking plate so the timing case needs to come off. I am wondering if removal is as simple as the removing the points assembly, screws and then knocking off the dowells, assembly in reverse?

Nothing inside the case will be thrown out of order in the process?

Everybody removes the timing cover every six months , to check the timing chain tension . !

Theres a black rubber washers on the oil pump to cover - tube .

a new Spare on the shelf beforehand wouldnt hurt . some have shimmed claerance .

Loose it and your DOOMED .

Strip Clean & lube the auto advance , If yr still run it. while your at it .

The sprocket Locking Tool is so you dont STRETCH ( a portion of ) the Timing Chain ,
with bleedy great spanners on your nuts .
 
Wouldn't be amiss to have a cut down timing case or the setup I've seen elsewhere, but not compulsory, I never had one for a long time.
New rubber washer for oil pump should be renew every time u have cover off.
 
If you are not removing the cam nut you don't need the tool that holds the intermediate spindle or the cut out cover that does the same thing.
 
Just going in to check things out and install the breather. If anything is out of order, there is still a month or so left of cold weather...

I would have a spare gasket, 2 points seals, 2 conical oil seals and a crank seal on hand.
When apart, determine if the crank seal in the cover needs replacing.
I would replace the points seal and conical pump seal.
If the cam chain needs adjusting, you'll need the holding plate/tool or cutaway cover to hold the idler shaft in place.
Don't adjust the chain without it.
You'll need or should have the tapered points seal installation tool.
Helps to slide the assembly over the crank.
 
Breather does everything everyone says it does.

Went from a small puddle of oil to just a few drops below the bike.

In order to check the timing chain tension you must have the special tool in place. OB sells it for not too much. It is a very good tool to have. Take a sharpie and write on the outside of the timing cover..."DOUBLE CHECK OIL PUMP SEAL!!!"
 
I replaced all seals and the chain was fine. I do need that tool though, had the chance to buy a cutout case awhile back. Should have done it.
