I should have said air impact wrench, in this case 1/2 drive.
And yes, also an air impact Hammer is wonderful for getting tapers unstuck etc.

One of the most used power tools I have is my 1/4" drive air ratchet. I have a 1/4" to 3/8" adaptor on it. The smaller 1/4" size is handier than the 3/8" counterpart and it can be used as a manual ratchet to break and torque fasteners by hand.

I'm not sure a 1/4" drive air ratchet will be effective on the trans nut if, it's really on there tight. It might work, it might not.
A 1/2" rattle gun is quite a different beast.

No, I use my 1/2" impact for such heavy duty use. The 1/4" drive air ratchet is for all of the smaller fasteners, 3/8" UNF and smaller. It can be used as a manual ratchet to break the fastener then the air will take over as soon as the fastener has broken free. To torque, just run it down until the air stalls and give it additional torque to calibrated arm torque specs.

I will be ordering that socket too, Great tips as always to be gleaned from these threads on this forum, gotta love it.

Tear down is progressing.

I have the engine stripped down to allow it to be rotated up and forward pivoting on the top rear mount bolt to clear the gearbox case. Head steady, carburetors and silencers are removed.

I'm going to remove the oil filter too. Waiting to pick up my brake drum from the machine shop. I had the circlip groove machined deeper and a slightly larger circlip provided. I have the proper OD/ID valve spring shims in .015:, .030" and '060" thickness to space the drum for proper chain alignment. My 32 YO son is going to assist to get some hands on experience for when he inherits the bike. He a decent mechanic, but a bit impatient and perhaps ham fisted, not good traits for working on old Limey bike eh?

I have opened up the headlight nacelle to install an LED headlight, reflector and 3 prong plug. I am also going to investigate putting a red indicator light for oil pressure between the turn signal indicator and light switch.

Going to have a pot of chili ready when he comes over after work.

A milk crate under the frame allows you to pull out the cradle and swingarm as a unit, and remove the forks/triples.

Once we tilted the engine up, removed the primary chain adjuster, removed the oil filter and got the hoses pushed out of the way the case rotated nicely to come out of the cradle from the port side.

Any other damage?
I'll have to clean things up for a closer inspection, but everything else looks AOK as far as I can tell at this point. The failure occurred at just above walking speed as I turned a corner at a stop sign.

The sleeve gear bearing feels like it has shrapnel in it. I ordered the complete rebuild kit from Andover Norton. All new bearings, bushings seals springs etc.

That's so ugly it's going to motivate me to get into my box.

It's a ticking time bomb. I got lucky, the failure happened at very low sped.
It amazes me that there are still bikes out there with these bearings fitted!
Glad you don't appear to have much damage

My Portuguese bearing lasted until about four years ago. AND it came out unmolested.
