I, too, am having difficulty with an Andover Norton gear. This is the layshaft 4'th gear. My problem is that the gear will only slide freely onto the layshaft about 1/4 of the required distance. It then binds so that I would need to tap into place with a light plastic hammer, although I have not done so.
What are your opinions on this tight fit? Does this particular gear need to be a free, sliding fit on the layshaft?

Thanks,
Ed

P.S. The old gear is freely sliding and both the layshaft and old gear appear to be in good shape. I am replacing layshaft 4'th since I'm replacing the sleeve gear.

Problem solved. I just heard back from Simon Amos at A/N. He told me that it was normal for this gear to be a tight fit. Encouraged by is email, I used a plastic hammer to tap it fully into place. Surprisingly, after doing so, it now slides on and off freely.

While the gear is a different matter than the bearing...after watching the NOC hemmings gearbox video for giggles, he stated the bearing goes on easy/slip fit. Most of the old ones do go on easier then the later center scribed ones which seem to be 1/2 thou bigger and are snugger AKA press fit in the 17mm bearing.
