Hi All,
I have 74 commando with a Mikuni single carb and stock throttle tube. My throttle cable setup is not great. The cable exits the throttle tube straight out and the cable isn't constrained to the throttle tube (just slips inside). When the bars are turned the idle changes a little and I fear it could get pulled out in use and inadvertently pull the cable. What is out there for a better setup? I would be nice to have cable and tube that have a threaded fitting and exit at a right angle like most modern bikes (locks the cable housing to the throttle tube). Anyone change to a different tube and have a cable that works (correct length, cable ends etc.). Thanks for the help.

I believe most problems occur in the first 2 feet from the throttle . My first suggestion would be to make sure the routing from the throttle back to the carb is correct . From the throttle you should have a nice loose loop heading towards the headlight shell and then turn back to feed in between the center tube and the right hand side of the tank tunnel . The cable sheathing should be free to slide back and forth ..

When I purchased my Mikuni from CNW at the end of last year it came with a new twist grip unit as the stock Norton one wasn’t compatible with the Mikuni cable. Perhaps this is your issue?

Call Sudco or Niche cycle or MAP and see if they sell just the throttle and cable from their kits. It will be a Barnett throttle or a look alike.

If you are using wide handle bars, the total length of the throttle cable might not be enough. Also, if there is an adjuster halfway down it's length you can get a problem when you turn your steering. On my bike I use twin carbs with a quick action twist grip. The cables are from a TZ350 Yamaha. They are available from any Yamaha dealer. For a road bike the cable length needed might be a bit more than for a race bike. I don't use a cable tube on the top of my carbs, the outer cables just fit straight into the adjusters. Take the cable you have and walk into any motorcycle dealership.

Hi, New member to site (MK3 Owner - longtime lurker here on Access Norton)
This may be what you are after, you will need a new throttle assembly to accept the threaded throttle end)

Cheers
Good selection of throttle cables to be found here

To install a single carb on my Commando MK3, with the splitted inlet manifold, what diametersize of the carb air outlet do I need?
I tried with Amal size 32 mm and main jet 280, but respons on throttle to slow and exhaust explosions during engine braking.

I have an Amal mk2 (2934) on my mk3 Commando. 280 main jet in the middle position. Pulls well, but never tried it with twin carbs to compare, but it's faster than a modern 650 Interceptor. No popping on decel. Has a 20 pilot jet (air screw around one and half turns out), 106 needle jet, 3 and a half slide, 2A1 needle. I use a K&N filter.
