Throttle cable removal; it's the little merde that gets ya'

So, Commando 850/3 slowly going into little and big plastic bags. The hand controls are hanging free now primarily because I'm not sure of the proper way to dissemble the throttle cable from the grip. Is the 1" long hexagonal bolt at the end of the flexible part of the cable supposed to rotate or is it fixed to the cable? Is the proper installation procedure just to spin the electrical controls about the end of the cable to attach it?

There's normally an angled cable guide at the upper end of the cable which threads into the twistgrip housing and is secured by a lock nut?

You can do it that way, but the usual method would be to disconnect the upper cable from the cable junction where it connects to the lower cables, and then unscrew the upper cable from the twistgrip housing.

So, what is the procedure to remove the upper cable? The long "nut" on the end of the cable won't rotate, it seems to be fixed to the end of the cable, and that longer nut needs to rotate to remove the metal upper piece. Does the cable have to be removed from the carbs or at the junction where the carb splits first?

The long adjuster nut at the lower end of the guide does not release the cable. You also need to split the combined Mk3 twistgrip and switch assembly (master cylinder must be removed first) before the inner cable nipple can be removed from the throttle sleeve.

Unlock the nut where the "upper piece" (the angled cable guide?) enters the twistgrip housing, then unscrew the cable guide from the twistgrip housing.

You could do either, but it's easiest if the lower cables are unclipped from the slides first then the assembly can be split at the cable junction box if required or the complete throttle cable can be disconnected from the throttle twistgrip as one assembly.
