I am not intending to make a political comment, I am just pointing out an anomaly which is due to a different mindset. A Frenchman once pointed out to me, the anomaly of compulsory voting in a democracy. I did not answer him. Australia is a very democratic country where voting is compulsory. However, when our soldiers suffer an injustice and refuse to fight, we do not select one in ten of them for execution. And we do not usually conscript for military service. Our soldiers are the best in the world. During WW1 and WW2, our soldiers scared the Germans shitless. Australians have a different mindset. One of my bosses was a German soldier - they like to be able to surrender when they are beaten. He said 'Australians are too indoctrinated'. My father was a WW2 soldier - he did not agree. He was once actually promoted and then they took his stripe off him. After the war, he had a lot of cops working for him on their days-off. They are used to being commanded.
