I would have "read more", but "newsletter" is a site that requires turning off your ad-blocker and "joining" the organisation. I will not turn off my ad-blocker for anyone, particularly for an overseas website.

I road raced a fair bit when I was in my 20s. And I know that if I had listened to my mate and gone racing with him in Europe, I would have raced on the IOM. These days I watch some of the on-board video of the IOM, and one of the things which really strikes me, is how difficult it must be to learn where every corner goes, before you would crash yourself. How would you ever force yourself to go slow enough to learn the circuit before you started going fast ? And even then you would have to cope with any machinery problems. I think that if I had ever gone there, I would probably have returned to Australia in an urn. Even on short circuits, you need to be very familiar with them before you can become fast enough to be competitive. When you race, you know the risks and if they are excessive, you need to back off. However you cannot put an old head on young shoulders.

Just goes to show how dangerous it is when a man with that level of experience dies in PRACTICE!

I have tremendous respect for all those that ride there. But I’m glad I chickened out when I did!

A drum brake is worse than any disc brake. If you use hard linings, you often have virtually no brakes until they heat up. And when they heat up they can lock and throw you. If you use soft linings, you might experience brake fade and run out of road. With disc brakes, they usually do not change and at least you can safely grab a handful.

Riding on the IOM with a drum front brake, does not bear thinking about.

Yes I hope nobody ever did that.

Disc brakes don't have self-servo. There are too many ways a drum brake can be wrong. On a small circuit a locking brake or a failure can cause an accident, but on the IOM it would he horrendous. I've done a lot of silly things in my life, but when I watch those on-board videos of the IOM, I AM HORRIFIED. - But for a simple decision I made when I was a kid. I might have raced there. I now know I would have come home to Australia in an urn. Ken Blake was a much better rider than I could ever be - he lasted one lap.

Re; "Disc brakes don't have self-servo"
2 opposed pistons -NO
4 opposed pistons - yes -believe it or not.
2 opposed pistons on a slider- Half a servo to the 4 pot one above.
