Grand Paul and of course others in Texas and Southern States concerning me right now . Thursday Feb. 18 th. No reply. No electricity , water , heat. Polar Vortex moved very deep south. Hope others are O.K. and helping others if capable of doing so. Only -9 C. here tonight.

Temps got up to 40F this afternoon. Things are thawing nicely.

Electric company reports the grid is now stable and does not expect any more rolling blackouts.

The shop cat survived being alone for 6 days, as well as a water pipe break.

All is returning to normal in East Texas. I expect the same in the Central Hill Country where GP is as well as further south towards San Antonio.

Thank you for thinking of us down here. :) The big problem is that the infrastructure was designed to deal with a couple of days or so of super cold temps. Not a week. For most here and I'm sure GP is in the same boat, Internet is just now coming back and water will come back here soon enough. I grew up in Rochester NY as a kid before moving to Texas. We'd get killer (literally) ice storms there and was used to sleeping in front of the fireplace and boiling snow for water. That's unheard of here.

We call it soup here because of the mosquito larvae in it..... Very hearty and nutritious.

Houston is coming back on line electrial wise but water is another story. Even once water service is restored plumbers will probably be tied up for months sorting broken water lines. Most houses here have water heaters and water lines in uninsulated attics.

Can someone knock on Grand Paul's door ? Or call ? You guys sound like you have it under control. Help others in need. Never before in recorded history I'm told.

In our area of San Antonio, we had no power from Sunday eve to yesterday late afternoon. House temp got down to 38F. Water was out from yesterday afternoon - about the time the power came back - until about 20 minutes ago. Friends lost power Sunday, got it back early this AM. We had one burst water pipe which, fortunately, was an easy fix after a quick trip to Lowes. The Lowes plumbing department was packed and fittings were selling like hotcakes!

Seems to be in order now but I won't be surprised if it all goes south again. ;) Checking the local news I'm wondering, whatever happened to that Covid thing? :)

Did you ever notice, that when you hold an exterior door open to serve an approaching cat, they always stop at the threshold and look behind themselves?

Not when the exterior temp is in the teens .... they hit the door running.

burst water pipes can be a horror show, standard procedure up here is to run copper pipes alongside hot air ducts, and use copious amounts of pipe insulation. That's usually good to -15 C, when it gets colder than that it's common practice to run a continuous light drip from faucets etc..

GP says they are doing ok. Power is back. Water is not. But otherwise hanging in there.

GP is either aloft in his ultra-light seeking those in need, or is giving the grandkids rides on his LazyBoy sled.

Hey guys this should not be in the classic section. you should be communicating in the Pub. It has nothing to do with Norton Commando's! That is if you want to make it a free for all. IMHO. nuff said. by the way I am thinking of you all down in Texas.
but its in the wrong forum section.
Cheers,
T

I can't take it any more......

We're doing "better". Supposedly no more rolling blackouts (after 5 days). We had snow, a break, then ice (power lines down), then snow, then no water, now have a trickle of water back just this evening. I took a NAVY shower. Thankfully, our gas stayed at decent pressure the whole time (fireplace and stove were well employed). Leg WAS feeling better 'till 2-1/2 hours in the queue at WalMart for about 1/4 cart of groceries (LOTS of empty shelves). Anyway, it was 25F, standing in snow and slush, the ankle is shot after that. (mainly why I hadn't been on the forum till a few minutes ago).
