[Topic moved from the "Wanted" Section -L.A.B.]

Hello one an all, i'm new here. i was wondering if any one could tell me how the early atlas with no over head oilers got oil to the rockers? i'mtrying to fit the early head on a 72 combat motor, why ,do you ask? my exuasts ports are striped out, and haven't found a bid enought tap to fix it yet! id appreciate an answer to my first question, call me stupid just haven't figured it out yet. thanks for any help i might could get, mr.muck

Welcome mr.muck,

Dominator & Atlas engines usually had their valve gear oil feed connected to the top of the cylinder head at two points, not on either side as a Commandos have.

If it is possible to fit an Atlas head to a Commando, then you would need to use the Commando rocker spindles with the high pressure rocker oil feed.

hi mr muck,as LAB points out the atlas oil feed is on top of the head not the sides as on the commando, however this is where the commando head steady bolts on so that the first problem to work around,my 64 atlas motor had the plain high pressure rocker spindles, the second problem i can see is the head bolts either side of the spark plugs are smaller in diameter than the commando so will need drilling out, which can be done {i drilled mine to take the commando size bolt} i did,nt have the headsteady problem because mine is in a featherbed frame with the featherbed headsteady

There are a few good places doing the exhaust port repair at a reasonable price, this will probably be easier and cheaper in the long run than trying to fit an earlier head.

Regarding thread repair, my local guy charged me something like $110 to clean out the old threads, weld in new sleeves, and re-cut the threads. He bought a bottoming tap years ago - I think he said it was about $120 for the tap back then.

Point is, any shop that deals with Nortons should be able to help you out.

I truely do thank all for you sujestions, hope you might guess i'm just a half crippled up poor man trying to stay in the wind!!! i've been trying to find a bottom tap that size so the next one i have problem with it'll be solved before i start. and sure am beginingto really dig this site. i'm new to all this .com stuff also . thanks again one an all!!!!! muck! just for a quick quote of my own , if your not liveing on the edge, your takeing up too much space!!!!! i've all ways like to go fast at times
