My road tax reminder came through. In the UK, vehicles over 40yo are still required to be taxed, but it is free, no charge. I rang the automated service. This time, for the first time, I was asked to confirm that the bike has not been substantially altered / modified. First time I've been asked that on a classic vehicle.

AKA: "boiling the frog" a little at a time

Mind you, and apologies to Mart for the slight detour, when mine hit the forty year exempt threshold I naively expected that I'd be fully refunded for tax paid beyond that date...
Didn't happen :-(

Ah, when I went into the local PO to ‘tax’ the Norton for its first outing in 15 years or so, I paid the 12 months value, whatever it was. Then a week later I received a full refund by cheque (remember those quaint ways of paying for stuff?) which I paid into my account. I was also sent a ‘historic’ vehicle V5. I guess I’ll get a reminder very soon to pay the sum of nowt. A bit bizarre really as it’s an offence if you don’t pay them nothing when you don’t need to pay.

But that annual 'heads up' gives them the opportunity to check both MOT and insurance status, no? All of which will be fed into the GATSO/ANPR database, of course :)

It’s got no MOT as it’s exempt.

isn’t insurance exempt as well? ;)
Not, if any Vehicle is taxed regardless of the fee it must be insured. If not they can fine you even if you have it off the road. This is a different fine from the one where you are caught on the road driving a vehicle as you lose your licence and get fined for that. So if your insurance lapses then SORN it.

I suppose we shouldn't be complaining about getting a bill that doesn't need paying but four bikes all come due different times and it is so pointless and needless but then not to The Authorities.

Sorn 3 on them for enough months so all 4 fall to be taxed in the same month, you can Sorn for 1, 2 3 etc months.

That came in when they introduced the MOT exemption. I do mine online and pretty sure you have to agree to the same question when doing it that way.
No, I've had my Dad's 1959 TR3a since 2011. Always taxed. Never asked this question before.

It's not exempt in the year it turns 40. Only applies the first calendar year it is over 40! Smacks of Civil Servants dragged kicking and screaming, being forced to give something away :) .

The not modified question is what's new, IMV. I think it relates to the new rules coming in about not modifying vehicles. Although, I thought that was new vehicles only.

I find the phone is quicker.

Yes as the rolling historic 40-year tax exemption updates on the 1st of April each year.

It has been there since the 40-year historic rule was introduced.

I seem to remember being informed it was April to avoid clashing with their 'New Vehicle' registration high points, though you can also be tripped up by the fact that 'taxation class' changes can only be made when you actually apply for tax, IIRC

I applied fro my Free tax at the local post office..... he even issued me a till receipt stating £0.00
