I need a new tacho for my 2014 Commando Sport, but just discovered that the Norton parts department is still closed due to COVID concerns. Does anyone have (or know of) one for sale? Mine quit working after a recent crash. The chrome cover is still fine, so I just need the tacho itself.

Hi Ken, is it possible to open those up?

I don't know, but I'll soon find out :). The crash did break the two mounting posts off the head (the ones that hold the tach into the chrome cover), but I managed to super glue and JBweld the plastic bits back together well enough to mount the tach with no visible damage. I'm guessing that the shock that broke the mounts was enough to damage the internals. I have nothing to lose at this point by taking it apart. I might even be able to find out who made it, and see if they can provide a replacement. I'm assuming that if I can find one from another brand bike, I might be able to just swap the dial face to still have the Norton logo. At worst, I can probably find an aftermarket replacement with similar dimesions, but I really would like to keep the Norton logo to match the speedo.

Thanks, Tony. That's great info. Too bad Continental can no longer sell direct. I'll get in touch with the Lauderdale shop.

Got this reply today from the Lauderdale folks:

"We can't repair those gauges. I've attempted it already once. The glass is laser sealed on to the canister, making it unserviceable."

For the moment, it looks like I'm waiting on Norton to open their parts department again. For normal riding, I don't really need the tacho, but I'm so used to having one that it feels weird to rid without it.

I also had some damage to the exhaust system, some grind marks on the silencer and a broken mount bracket on the decat pipe. I had hoped to be able to buy a new decat pipe (with stronger mount design) along with the tachometer. Instead, I welded the decat mount back together and added a reinforcing washer, and managed to get it all back together. It looks like something else in the system got a bit bent in the crash. The left silencer is significantly closer to the shock and swinging arm than the right one is. I manged to get them a little better with a spacer on the decat mount, and some straightening on the silencer mounting bracket. Good enough for now, but I'd eventually like to sort it out a little better. This is a picture of the damage.

Sorry to hear that. Maybe they can order from VDO directly ?

I’ve been waiting for months for a new one as well with the parts dept closed, they said they’ll contact me as soon as they’re open again and I haven’t ridden for a few months due to getting a new knee, I’m hoping to be riding again in around a month so I’ll wait it out for a bit longer.
