What size socket for this L.H. worm gear ? I have the camshaft nut socket (R.H.).
I'm starting into the bottom end tear down for the JS long rods / short pistons .. before they arrive from California.
Wish me luck.

I know it is 'Half Whit' but several times I have used 15/16" AF, no problem.

Thanks , I've just found the 1/2 BSW spanner/wrench in the bottom of my tool drawer , hidden .
No socket , but it fits well. Today I went to the hardware store to buy a 4 ft. 5/8 dowel ( cut down to size... ) to put through both small ends of the rods. About to attempt this. Reading L.H. thread , yes.
Then the camshaft nut. To support the idler cam chain gear from undue pressures I will jam another piece of the dowel into the sprockets to arrest strain on it. Steady pressures to both , no strikings. Wood chunks are our friends with these old machines.

45 mins. later , the worm gear nut is off. Steady pressure with penetrant did not work , but 2 strikes on wrench end did.
Cam shaft nut off next with steady pressure and penetrant using power bar and 1" socket. Used a tire iron with penetrant to pull off sprocket with gentle taps all around at backside of chain.
Next big wire cutters to grab small key out . Then the 3 jaw puller. Almost there.

Key out with big wirecutters as grabber in one second.
3 jaw puller needed thick oil lubricant to spin up again after many years. NO lube to 3 grabber teeth obviously. Lots of fiddlings with it to get the big deep grip behind before the tight pull.
Again one second to get out this small key with a cutters grab.
Splitting the cases not going well , I used Yamabond 25 years back. Tips ? Heat gun all around ?
Sorry this is suddenly turning into a restoration thread or whatever. Enjoy.

O.K. how do I get the drive side crank seal out ? The circlip has no tangs to pull out . Is there a circlip with plier compress/ pull out tangs I can use for the future that will fit into the slot instead of the original ?
Plus i'm stuck on splitting the cases due to the amazing glue job I did 25 or so years back.

I used a Proto J-shaped gapping tool I have and I was just able of lever the seal off.

You can also use a self tapper to do this I think.

Lift one end out of the groove with the tip of a thin blade.

The latest clip has a bent 'leg' at one end to assist with removal but is not absolutely necessary.

You don't mention one of these.....you need one:

Circlip ( drive side , old style ) , came out easily using a one-sided razor blade. The cases have to be split open first to gain access as the D.S. crankshaft was in the way.
Split the cases easily as per the manual . 2 ft. wooden 1" dowel did the job , rested against D.S. , 2 smacks and she separated.
Next: remove the 2 Con rods in prep for the J.S. delivery. It's held at Border Customs until I pay the $192 in Duty.
Just paid it with credit card. Tracking says the rods and pistons will be on their way to me in 2 days.
So exciting.

Rods off. 1/4 W. socket on ratchet. Shells good , no score marks at all. Magnetic plug and big drain plug filter screen spotless. Good to go with the new rod nuts and bolts .
