Swingarm Installation

Does this look right? The manual and parts book is a little unclear.

As Mike says, yes, the cupped side of those o-ring holders go on towards the cradle and the o-ring goes between the cupped washer and the cradle. The bushing holds the cupped washer on.

Dave, your powdercoating looks about like mine. I just this morning broke apart the bottom end for new bearings and pistons.

Did you clean the powdercoat off the inside face of the swingarm openings? That thickness might affect the fitting, no?

Yes, I had them mask the inside face (and outside face where the round endcaps mount) of the swingarm where that cupped washer would hit the face against the swingarm. There was a bit of P/C there but I cleaned it up with a razor knife. I test fitted it a while ago and it seems real nice but I also had an oversize SS shaft put in the swingarm and cradle because it was ovaled from wear. I also had 2 extra bolts put in the shaft sort of like the Krugler(?) clips. The guy that did my PC let me come in after blasting and help with the masking and they had a whole bunch of masking circles, so I didn't have to use any nuts/bolts/washers which was real cool. I spent a lot of time studying the areas that needed to be masked. I almost feel like an expert now, but it was probably overkill, but I am happy and that's what counts.

I also didn't paint or PC the area around the swingarm mount, I figure it will get enough grease/oil from leaking to keep the rust at bay.

Actually a light coat of spray paint will protect and only be nominal thickness.

Please post a picture of how you did the two extra bolts in the spindle. Thanks.

I had Nithburg in CA do it quite a while ago. I sent the whole cradle and bushings and he reamed it out oversize, made or got me a new SS spindle, reamed the bushings to fit the new spindle and it was about $175 at the time, maybe 03. I don't know if they still do that work, but he turned it around pretty quick. The bolts are the same size as the original center one. I figure it is almost as good as the Krugler clips, but have no way of knowing. It has to be better than the original and I am not going to be racing this bike.

How do you press the bushing in and make sure you get them straight? Press one and fit the spindle and make sure you got it square? Fit both and pray?

I assume Nithburg put the bushings in as a set and reamed them in the swingarm, I don't know. Recently, after powdercoating, I pressed the bushings in the swingarm with a clamp, test fitted the swingarm on the cradle, pushed the spindle through one bushing, the cradle, and through the other bushing and it all seemed as tight as "you know what" with no binding. I can feel no play in the spindle or swingarm without even putting in the allen bolts. It's probably 10 orders of magnitudes better than when I took it apart. Now whether it is like original, I have no way of knowing. I just feel happy with it. If you want to get exotic, you can look up the Phantom page with the straightest Norton, if you know what I mean and I am not trying to be sarcastic.

Swoosh,
Here's my recent conversion of the Mk2 850 swingarm to double lockbolts with an .005" o/s axle. used a 4 inch expandable line reamer. Its worked out good and I'm happy with the result.
