Suggestions for striking colours for Interstate tank needed.

I'm thinking of getting my Interstate tank repainted as it as the black it is presently painted in, is a bit grey/black and not very striking. Also the twin gold stripes are not very good.

Of the standard colours, I like the candy apple red, and am considering doing it in black with a heavy gold flake, but as yet am undecided.

So the question is, what unusual, but not awful/horrendous colours, colour combinations have you got, or seen on a Commando Interstate that seem to work? Photos of course are welcome. Also I realise it is very subjuctive.

I did see something a year or so ago on ebay (I think) and it was a fairly dark green colour with multiple colour flek in it. It was done by a painter in the USA on a Commando tank. It was striking on a small area, but I'm not so sure how the big expanse of an Interstate tank would look. Can anybody remember seeing this, and have a link?

I just thought I'd see if there are any good ideas out there before I commit to one of my two ideas.

Large Silver metalflake with deep laquer looks rather swish. I had a fastback tank on mine once in that, before I smashed it up in an accident, & it did look good.

I'd more or less discounted silver as it can look a bit flat, but large silver metalfalke with ++ laquer, that could look quite good :idea:

I suppose it would look more extreme than this roadster tank?

You can get this color mixed at any good paint store: 2011 Jaguar Ultimate Black. Make a trip to your local Jaguar dealer and look at this colour on a new XJ in the sunlight- most amazing metallic black you will see. Every colour in the rainbow in there, and it sparkles and changes as you move. I bought a quart of it, have the sidecovers almost to my satisfaction, tank is next. Good luck! ejd

One thing to think about when choosing a color for the Interstate is that the tank is huge. The blue metalflake that works on the Roadster might be too much of a good thing on the Interstate. Dark colors minimize the appearance of size; light, bright colors do the opposite.

I have seen very few in British Racing Green, but the few I have seen have looked sharp. I have wondered if you could get away with gold metal flake in dark green paint.

Also seems with all that space to fill that a decent two-tone could be done, but I have yet to hit on the combination that suits me. Of course a major part of the battle is deciding how to divide the space.

I had to look up "swish" and take it to mean "fashionably elegant".
I agree - This is a really nice paint scheme.

I've rambled on here before about how I think that black and gold are Velocette colours. A metalflake black with silver lining and graphics looks nice and slims an Interstate.

The original 'Interstate Blue' slimmed down the early wide tanks nicely and again used silver lining. Inspired by that, I had my Roadster done in the mid-1980s in a Mercedes Benz blue metallic with silver lines. I always found it understated but classy and it set blued exhausts off a treat.

This picture is a scan of a photo so the colours are probably a bit off.

Thanks for all of the ideas everybody. You've given me a bit of food for thought!

I like the silver/black Norton, it looks great, but I think you need to have the Fastback tail piece for that to work well i.e. paintwork behind the seat to balance it. Anybody got a Fastback tail section for sale?

Jaguar ultimate black sounds interesting as well. It sounds like a variation of heavy gold metalflake with black. There is a Jag dealer about 4 miles from where I live so might pop down tomorrow and take a look.

I think I'm too old for such a radical colour now. It could be painful to look at with a hangover! :lol: :lol:

As I said in my original post, someone (Ithink in the USA) was offering green paint work with multi coloured fleck in it. It did look good.

I'm looking at colors for mine as well. The bike was originally fireflake red, a bit too much for the Interstate. I think I'm going with a nice medium/deep blue. Tossed the Idea of green or copper around as well, but I've done the last tank in blue, and really like the color.
