Streets to ban petrol and diesel cars

What does the scheme involve?

During peak hours, nine roads in Hackney and Islington will be restricted to ultra-low emissions vehicles only – meaning those that emit less than 75/kg of CO2.

That means drivers of anything other than electric cars and the newest hybrids and hydrogen vehicles will be banned from the streets.

Something to do with Brexit or Donald Trump ? There is a lot of it about these days.

Do you believe that Elon Musk or any Chinese manufacturer of storage batteries is as concerned about the end-of-life fate of their products, as they are about making a profit ? In South Australia, because there are no mountains high enough on which a hydro scheme might be built, the state government is buying huge storage batteries for electricity which is generated by wind and solar farms. The same applies to owners of electric vehicles - the batteries have a limited life - who pays for the recycling or disposal ? In the case of those two local councils you mentioned - would it be the ratepayers ?
Also in Australia, these days fitting solar panels to your roof is popular. The projected life expectancy of the panels is 25 years - what then ? - and there are millions of them. There is only one company manufacturing solar panels in Australia - I doubt they will go into recycling the old ones.
I am as concerned as anyone about carbon pollution, but perhaps we need to be ahead of the game ? If you stand by the side of any road in Australia, you will see that almost every car has only one person in it. The most sensible solution for commuting is a well-tuned 250cc four-stroke single-cylinder petrol-driven motorcycle. But if you do that in Australia, you would not live long.
