Strange experience trying to transfer title on 66 Atlas

I finally went to the DMV today to title my 66 Atlas bike/project . The DMV here in St. Louis wouldn't let me submit the application because they said that since it was an out of state title that I had to have the VIN inspected by law enforcement. I didn't have this problem when I titled my 72 Commando from out of state.

It was rather simple though. I called the local police department who came out to my house in about an hour. They inspected the VIN on the title and the VIN on the bike and filled out Missouri form 5062. So I should be good to go now. I asked the cop if he had many of these and he said not really, it is usually only for trailers???? Who knows... They ran the VIN and it is all clean so it's not really a big deal, but I thought that it was strange. Anyone else had to do this?

Multiple times. The State of Ohio requires a VIN inspection for everything being titled from out of state. The exception is with brand-new vehicles that have not yet had a title issued. I can see the trailer thing being common. In NC boats don't have titles but the trailers do and may require inspection when bought and sold. I've had that happen as well. If you make a trailer over a certain size, the same inspection has to be done.

I had a local "inspector" for the DMV show up once here in NC to run a VIN on a bike I had bought. He was part of the DMV but open carried a Glock and had a badge. That was strange to me.

In Texas it is part of obtaining a title for any vehicle that you do not have an original or certified copy of a title for. That includes customs, salvaged, and homebuilt. However, in Texas, (at least in Laredo), I have to haul the bike to the PD on my trailer, and it's only by appointment on Wednesdays (with a 2-week waiting list)!

Thanks grandpaul. But I have a notarized original title. That's why I was surprised. And indeed , I was surprised that the police came out within an hour .
