I have a set of new LF Harris A65 rods, one with a spit hole and one without. If the one without is not a mistake I would say it belongs on the left rod journal, the idea being that running the rod with no spit hole would keep the oil pressure up for the second rod. Correct thinking?
And the spit hole does it face inboard or outboard? Or can I peen it shut altogether?

From J.B. Nicholson "Modern Motorcycle Mechanics", 7th edition:

On A50-A65 crankcase servicing:
"Early A65 models had interchangeable con-rods. In 1966 the drive side con-rod was provided with an oil spray hole through the big end as used on the earlier A10 motors..."

On A7 and A10 crankcase servicing:
"The drive side con-rod is identical to that used on the timing side except that is has a small hole drilled through the upper side of the big end which registers with the oil hole in the bearing shell. The purpose is to allow some additional oil feed to the left side cylinder to better balance the cylinder lubrication. The right side cylinder obtains some additional oil as a result of oil escape from the right side main bearing. On the original assembly, the drive side rod is installed so that the oil hole is towards the flywheel."
