I am attempting to switch to a metal tank on my 70 commando but the tank i got (orginal metal) is slightly wider at the front and since my frame / turn stop has worn down, the forks hit the tank on one side. If i weld / build up the original frame stop, my powdercoat will get destroyed so I am trying to avoid that option. I was hoping to add a steering dampener which could have a built in stop so it would limit my forks from turning so far...can a steering dampener do this? has anybody else had a similar problem?

Welcome.

The 68-70 models really didn't have a separate stop like the later models. There are 2 lugs on the headstock that contact the lower tree. The handle bars will swing much farther than 71 and up. It is possible to add stops, but don't ask me, I'm still using my fiberglass tank. I'm sure someone has done it though. There was a thread on this a while ago, do a search, you might find something.

Someone was adding a stop that bolts on to the downtubes. I'll add more info if I find it. basically it was a bent plate with the stops built in affixed to the upper end of the forward downtubes.

that's what i got....2 bumps on the headstock...I will try to search for the other thread

"Someone was adding a stop that bolts on to the downtubes. Think the post referred to above was mine called “Please help my steering stop” it has photos of a triton set up I was thinking about using. Ended up going with these bad boys  .

Also have a look at "Fork Yokes (Triple Trees)" very end of last page on that thread there are two other options from Jeandr & domiracer66 which might work for you.

Why not try slackening the front fuel tank mounts and moving the tank back a bit, the mounting holes allow for about half an inch forward or back from the centre position and this might just give you sufficient clearance.

even with the tank back...the forks come real close to the tank..."1/8" or less, so before i pay for new paint....was hoping to prevent future problems....I'm confused how these blocks attach? do they attach to the top side of the bottom triples?
