Spray on Chrome-Any experience of this?

Wow!!! No, I have no personal experience with this stuff. I do, however, have personal experience with Jay, and he is VERY picky, especially about what he endorses or puts on his show. So if he likes it, it's probably pretty good. I may be seeing him soon so I will ask him what he thinks. How much does it cost? It even looks idiot-proof, so maybe I could even do it... Great Post!
 
This looks like the "Chrome" you would see on a Revell Model. Pretty good, like J. Leno says. He stops at large parts which I read as large, flat or gentle curve pieces which would show the loss of depth. Also, I think it would be fine on the inside of an auto, but on the outside of a motorbike, not so sure.

I have no right to put it down, as I have had no experence with this process, but, I'll wait till the fat lady sings.

If it's too good to be true .... well you know.
 
I have used some 'chrome' spray can paint which looks really good, however if you try to clear coat it, it goes muddy. Don't know what that material is he sprays on that turns 'chrome' though. I bet it lasts about as good as any clear coat. It probably wouldn't work very good for nuts/bolts/washers.

I watched this video a couple of times. I am amazed. I am just guessing that the activation process probably electrically charges the primer and thus plates the item with the "chrome". The only thing that bothers me is the apparent amount of waste. It would be in my nature to try to minimize it.

Has anybody tried any of Caswell's chroming kits? It would be interesting to compare results and costs.
 
Yes, I used Caswell's Copy Chrome on a lot of parts. Actually a nickel plate, but only one step and it does oxidize a bit after a few years, but polishes right back up with a light buffing with something like Mothers. It takes about an hour to do what you can fit in a 10oz glass, so it is pretty time intensive. Plus all the extra things you need to polish, if that is all you are doing it would be easier to send it out for chrome buy then you would also have to chase all the threads again. At least with Copy chrome you can just plate the heads of the bolts.

I would think the spray on product would not be durable and the idea of a nice vintage bike with imitation chrome just isn't very appealing. I would like to try the caswell kit sometime.
 
On the website they show a couple of tanks and some other large parts that look fairly nice. I also would be curious about durability, but I think the video said you need to clearcoat it. A catalyzed clearcoat is pretty durable. i wonder how this finish would compare to a "chromelike" powder coating?
 
That powdercoat that's called "near chrome", I call "ain't chrome"

It's glossy silver and durable, but it ain't chrome!
 
Yes, I had my trees and the front mudguard bridge powder coated 'chrome', and it is not chrome like. Actually it looks more like whatever they originally painted on there, but tougher. Here's a picture of it next to chrome. I sort of like it, at least there, but not to look like chrome.

I work in a place that has its own powder coating plant and zinc vats.
The silver on your fork mount looks like what we call "satellite silver"

We have spray chrome equipment but it came as part of de commissioning spoils from a plating shop and the manufacturer will not supply us with spares or instructions.
