I'm thinking I may already know the answer to this question, but need advice anyway. During a ride, I noticed the speedometer quit on me, and after taking it home, saw the speedometer cable dragging on the ground and bent up, the speedometer gear spun out of whack, obviously twisted away from the cable by the hub. The ferrule where the cable inserts into the gear is ripped through.

I'm concerned w/ the integrity of the bearings on the rear hub. Any insights? I also don't want to replace a relatively costly speedo gear if I don't have to, so I guess we'll see if that's salvageable. I know the cable needs replaced. It's bent 90 degrees at the end. I'm afraid the bearings are shelled. It was slinging grease, but I can't tell if that was from the hub or the speedo gear. I can't think of much else besides the hub that would cause the gear to torque like that. Anyone else had this happen?

L.A.B, that link you sent includes photos that could not be more representative of my situation. Thank you.
