Hi, just stripped the oil pump and noted that when upon assembly, a certain lube is recommended, anyone know what that might be. I was also wondering if the different speedo' ratios are achieved with the use of different spiral drives in the box and that the shaft that spins the cable are all the same, thanks David

just stripped the oil pump and noted that when upon assembly, a certain lube is recommended,...

Where have you seen that?

...anyone know what that might be.

If "a certain lube is recommended" then doesn't that answer the first part of the question...or I'm not following this and I've only used engine oil.

I was also wondering if the different speedo' ratios are achieved with the use of different spiral drives in the box and that the shaft that spins the cable are all the same

I don't follow, as the "spiral" (worm) gear is the shaft that drives the cable.

I would expect each ratio to be a matched pair of gears.

I use Suzuki Moly Paste (Part # 99000-25140 and around $15 for a small tube) on all high load items in new engines including oil pumps and am yet to find a better product (to the point of not getting it on your skin being hard to remove)
Moly assembly lube would be a second option for me (more for bearing shells)

I use Graphogen assembly paste if that could be the "certain lube". I don't think I used it on the oil pump.

The speedo drive acts like an oil pump at times esp using moly as you see the black stains all over the
hub cover! 140wt gear oil seems like a good idea but it leaks out too easily.

I am a great advocate of Graphogen for engine assembly, on big ends, around new mains, piston rings, cam journals and lobes, etc, etc.....

But I wouldn't dream of putting it in an oil pump.....and I sincerely doubt you did....engine oil only, using an oil can and spinning the pump!

Why? Because you want the pump to draw and feed free flowing engine oil as soon as possible on start up, and I just can't see how any paste would help the pump do that.

I do prime the system with engine oil using a manual pump/syringe when I am ready to do the initial start.

(I also do initial start up on rollers and have an oil pressure gauge temporarily fitted to confirm some oil pressure before inserting the spark plugs!, but I use it this stuff because I have it. I wouldn't do this with a kick-start, or even an electric start.)

I have never seen advice to use anything other than oil!

The Moly paste is only on the sides of the gears where there is always signs of rubbing which is somewhat ironic.

Yes, if I had used it, which I don't think I did, then it would've been on the drive spindle but as the oil seems to make its way through the pump easily enough (unless there's an anti-wetsump valve!) without assistance when standing then the pump shouldn't be without lubricant.

I have only ever used oil in the oil pump after reassembly

Please specify where you found mention of a recommended lubricant for the speedometer drive. Since the shaft that drives the speedo cable is part of the worm gear, no, that part differs for both the 2:1 ratio and 1.25:1 ratio speedometer drive gearboxes.

I actually found the recommendation for lubing the speedometer drive.

So, Esso is now part of Exxon/Mobil. They list two G.P. [general purpose] aviation greases.

Mobil SHC 100 Grease

and

Mobil Grease 33

I'm sure that the products recommended by others would also be suitable.

However, fireflake's query was about a certain lube being required for the oil pump...

...just stripped the oil pump and noted that when upon assembly, a certain lube is recommended,..

..but that appears to have been a misinterpretation of the information on the RGM website regarding new (AN) oil pumps that says: "pumps should not be dismantled or degreased before installation" and not that a special lube is required when rebuilding existing pumps...

"TWIN CYLINDER OIL PUMP. THIS OIL PUMP HAS BEEN SELECTIVELY ASSEMBLED AND TEST-RUN TO ENSURE CORRECT PERFORMANCE. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DISMANTLE OR DE-GREASE IT BEFORE INSTALLATION AS THIS WILL REMOVE VITAL LUBRICANT FROM INTERIOR COMPONENTS."

The speedo drive gearbox part of the post was about ratios.

Actually, he was asking if the output shaft [part of the worm gear] is interchangeable between the two different ratios.

Yes, but the actual question was:

I only lightly grease my speedo drive when I am replacing the tyre or when the wheel is off the bike, I am still running my original speedo drive as well the original cable since new and with well over 160k miles on it, as for engine rebuilds I mix a 50/50 mix of motor oil and STP for assembly nothing else, I also prime the oil pump with the same mix, have been doing this ever since my first rebuild and in every other motor rebuilds I have done, have done a few Norton and Triumph motors this way and have never had any problems and every rebuild I have so far done the motors are still going and I been mixing STP in all my oil changes since the late 70s on all my old British bikes, some may say snake oil but it works for me and have got long life out of my motors, my mate also uses STP in his old Triumph and it keeps going.
