Thanks again just checked all that and looks like I got about 12.34 across both ends on red an white yellow.

I also reconnected the speedo just in case, the needle moves when you turn it on and the display works as well, I had it on the rear stand and put it in gear but nothing.

I remember Rob Jameson saying that the speed sensor at the wheel can be “sensitive” to the distance between the two sensors. Might be worth checking on a belt and braces front? Charge is obviously getting through to the speedo as it sweeps when you turn the key.

I think Bluedog has an older bike with the transmission mounted sensor.

Yep transmission mounted sensor it's a 2015. What does it actually pick up in there and is it possible for that to dislodge?
Also when that needle moves it just goes below zero for a sec then back up.
I think I need to do the point 4 5 test with the bike running and wheel turning, will I be looking for an increase/ fluctuation in voltage or ohms?

Another here with a needle which clicks back below zero briefly at key on. And no back light on the speedo. And if i ride in the rain the LCD display auto toggles on to trip and resets to zero every 5 miles or so.....
Other than that the clocks work fine - so far.

I've given up and will either ride it without a speedo to Brisbane or trailer it haven't decided yet but will be awhile, I pulled the 8 pin plug apart thinking there would be a resistor there but unfortunately it was just a plastic terminal to hold the wires, took the tank off and tried to follow the wires and find something that resembled a resistor but got back to the mess of wires at the ecu and fuses and I'm afraid I have met my match as far as electronics go, I'll post when I get it sorted , but that won't be for awhile, looks like most of the riding will have to be on the 750 for awhile... and that ain't so bad.

Good luck with it. You read the 1K resistor and it must be built into that black plastic plug body at the speedometer . I'd say that you did a good job of troubleshooting and a very commendable effort !

Love my 961 but have more easy going fun on my old Bonnie. Reminds me not to take life so seriously. That 750 is a sweet ride. Less complicated.

I’ll second that, just been for a brief 50 miles on my 1980 T140E. Much better around the narrow country lanes than the 961. Sweet, smooth, nimble and quite brisk between 4K and 6k too.

And as nice as the 961 sounds, I do prefer the sound of a 360 degree 750 twin with peashooters!

I'm using a turnout shortie and it is LOUD. Love the backdraft on decel with the 2:1. BBUUUWWAAAAAAAAAAAA Shits and giggles.

Well bike is sorted, I need fly up to Brisbane next week and pick it up, hopefully I can post a photo of the location of the offending resistor, I've only talked to the shop on the phone since the repair but he said the resistor lives in the main wiring harness somewhere near the TPS, they remapped the bike while it was there so will see how the ride goes home around 800km, mums coming too so will be 2 up.
I been thinking about power commander but the guy in bris says no need, will be plenty traffic and also long stretches to see if the new map makes much difference.

Great news. Have a blast!!

Picked the bike up here is a pic of where the resistor lives in the main harness here in photo apparently the turning of the headstock is enough to break it over time this has been re routed so it hopefully won’t happen again, anyway might save someone some time in the future the service guy said it’s just a skinny in line one about an inch long. You can see the new wrapping on the harness

So that 1 K ohm resistor is not in the speedo unit plug ? I thought Rob said it was in the plug inside the speedo ? And if memory serves you could read the 1 K resistance when you measured at the plug correct ? So did that mean the wire had come apart ? Did you measure from the speedo plug end or the sensor plug end ? I don't remember now ? Would a continuity check from sensor to speedo have found this ? I think so . Thats a bad place to put that resistor , right where the steering bends the harness !

Hi tony I did check and it appeared to be ok that's why I took it to the dealer in the end and yes that's exactly what happened I talked to the guy that did the repair and he explained it as that right where the steering bends he re routed slightly and said it should be good for now.
He said he had done one other and it was exactly the same thing, bad spot for a tiny resistor.
