Hi Folks,

New to the forum, but have found it invaluable resource of information! Thank you!

I'm half way through my 1973 Mk1a Commando restoration and I'm currently tackling the Speedo and Tacho.

The speedo is the easiest, that works, just needs a replacement chrome bezel, however, the tacho restoration is proving somewhat more difficult to resolve!.

As you can see from the picture below, the needle return spring is completely finished -

The tacho appears to have suffered some damage in a crash, bending the drive slightly, causing the mechanism to bind resulting in the needle stop being snapped off and the coil winding around the needle drive.

Anyway, this is a long way of asking whether anyone knows where you can buy spares from for these?.

I can get the replacement chrome bezels no problem at all, naturally, the rest (such as a replacement spring) are proving more illusive! :D

Alternatively, I was thinking about buying one if these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-VEGLI...pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts_13&hash=item1c28f8060b

...and fitting the face from the old tacho?.

Anyway, all advice greatly appreciated. I could take it to a chap I know locally who is superb at restoring these, but I enjoy learning new things and restoring every aspect of classic cars/motorcycles.

Cheers!

Welcome! Good that you want to repair clocks... fine detail, no trouble  I'm just guessing here, but the clock repair guys probably have no interest in sharing supplier info. Good luck with your search, and keep us posted.

Hi Concours :) , yes, it will most likely be a trade secret which I completely understand, we all have to make a living! :D

If any of those suppliers/clock repairers are willing to sell me a new spring and two new bezels, please PM me.

Money made, secret still safe, happy all round! :D

thanks acotel, no listing for Norton Veglia Tacho though, but will keep an eye on that

Been looking at the tacho spring in more detail.. it effectively seems to be a small coil made with hardened brass(?) strip wire, located on the shaft with a collet and tied off on the outer edge of the mechanism.

Looking at what Horological suppliers have off the shelf and see if I can find something similar to make a spring from. I'm sure calibration would be interesting though!

Might by a good idea to sent to a "repair shop" .. If you also need bezels crimped on and "calibrations" could be an issue in the basement.. :D :D :D :D

You're quite right olChris :D

Guess I'm a gulton for punishment, but I enjoy learning new things in restoration and for some reason this set of clocks sparked my interest more having just fixed my mates CB400/4 Speedo.

Will give it a go and recount experience her (which will probably drive more trade to the repairers to be honest! :D ha ha ha)

I normally use A.E. Pope for repairs, who fortunatly isn't very far away from me. He does a great job of Speedo/Tacho repairs and restoration... will no doubt end up using his services again soon! :D

Whilst researching today i saw a "speedo needle" for a Norton .. I thought that is strange, such a small bit to the puzzle... the site i cannot fully rememeber but some one else will..... It started with an "em?" and include had a word similiar to "malaysia" (the country).. That what i recall and USA based cycle parts. See it often during research.

Hope that kicks the ball off............... I do have a green dot tacho, no case, no bezel, crappy face, and generally horrible looking... But i can flick the needle and it returns, but havnt put a drive mechanism into it yet to see if it functional.. Maybe if you get realllllllly stuck i can help..

I was told by clock repair service in S.California that Veglias coud not be repaired. I have a MKIII Veglia Speedo in the spares bin for 30.00$ pus shipping if you need it.

You might try Joel Levine Company in Lafayette, Georgia. On his website he claims he can do anything for any kind of motorcycle gauge. He also states that sells parts and if he does not have the parts, he can make them.

Good luck and let us know if he is a good source.

Hi all,

Just thought I'd post the progress so far...

The collection of springs turned up yesterday and I've had a chance to play around with the Tacho.

Mostly by pure luck, bodgery and a bit of fettling, I have been able to fit a spring that seems to do the job well in tests so far -

Spinning it up at various speeds on a drill shows it to be reasonably accurate.

I used a laser photo tachometer to make sure the drill rpm was right during testing.

Anyway, its been an interesting experience and the new Bezel is on its way so I can finish the job.

My recommendation is if this happens to you, send it to a clock repairer.

It will be cheaper (the amount of stuff I've bought to do it means I could have had it repaired for same price, accurate and probably longer lasting than this will be.

Still, it was a rewarding experience and I learnt a lot! :D

Nice one. I've had to go inside my Veglia speedo a few times and made parts to retain shafts and small sprockets and generally tighten up the internals. I've not had to spend a lot but was tempted by a dial face from that US supplier someone quoted. It was $200 so I decided to live with the 'patina'. BTW do you have a part no for that spring?

Hi mate!, the spring was one of the many I got in a pack of them from ebay.. just follow the link in the eariler post :D

They are remarkably simple but precise devices aren't they? :)

Ha ha sorry Keith, I missed that one :D not sure what I'm going to do with them all now! ha ha ha... ebay them as "Veglia Tacho spares"?

I finished off both clocks today...

Used "Cream of Tartar" as a watered down paste to clean up the dial faces beautifully -

Bit of carb clean + non lint soft cloth on the casings and glass to sort them out, touch of nail vanish to provide extra security on the new spring fixings, one last accurate reading test of each with the drill and down to finally clamping and punching over the bezels.

Here's the end result -
