Hey guys,

Picked up on this spare headlight unit for sale for the Dominator. A$400. Looks like the same unit as the Commando albeit with different mounting brackets.

Can any of the brains trust confirm whether this headlight unit is the same on both models and how expensive a new headlight unit is through normal channels - if they existed of course. Could be useful holding a spare. May also be useful information for the alternate spares thread.

Hi Sorry I cannot help you if they are both the same But changed days. Five years ago when picking a bike up from being serviced noticed this in the service department office. There were at least two boxes of them. Cowls and headlight units that were obviously pre owned.

Those were the early units, Graham, with the plastic bowl....they pretty much just fell apart.
The later unit is a Highsider unit. They now do a chromed rim version of the all black...looks very nice, infact I supplied one for a customers bike.
That looks like the correct lamp unit though, Stephen. But the brackets aint Norton.

If anyone is looking to replace their earlier plastic bowled lamp with the later one, you'll need to extend a few bits of your wiring as the entry is underneath, not at the rear. You'll also need a spacer each side of the lamp...Norton used the same spacer as found on your front sprocket cover, albeit anodised black.

Thanks guys - will probably give it a miss then. Not likely to need one unless something dissasterous occurs, then I quite fancy the chrome rimmed version. Also have no use for those funky looking brackets. Haven’t given up on finding a cafe racer style fairing, although I guess I’m guilty of waiting for the solution to fall into my lap. May be waiting for a while!

There is one for sale in the Uk with a fairing I am sure Stu will know the who what where and how https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/234062158047?hash=item367f3118df:g:SroAAOSwpCtg0ySE

i) On my 2017CR got my rim chromed (stop sniggering in the corner, boy!) and really improves the look especially without the fly screen fairingy thing as it matches the clock covers.

ii) Nope sorry - still looks like it came off a different bike. Someone on the forum or a relative must have some design skills to come up with a matching fairing?

my 2015 Sport came with a fancy fasceted reflector that was bloody useless at night but looked great , in fact it was one off the worst headlights I have ever had. I replaced the guts with a Cibie unit and LED bulb and now I can actually see where I'm going at night , I thought that was the general idea of a headlight , to light your way at night not just looking good. Does any one out there actually ride after dark , or in winter.?

400 bucks. Wow. Pretty sure I paid about 60 bucks for the upgraded metal one. There's got to be an aftermarket that would fit.

Yep - that’s 300 USD. Luckily I don’t need one anyway, it was just gonna be a spare.

Not sure about the fairing on the bike you link Clive, a bit ‘fugley’ for me. I think the Sergio one above is nigh on perfect, for the Cafe Racer of course. A replica of the Thruxton fairing that IMO really works with the Norton lines and the size of the (rather large) tank, from a scale perspective.

Looked at it very closely but there was quite a lot of mounting fabrication involved, not something I could do myself. Also, the ‘bacon slicer’ element to having an aluminium fairing hard mounted in front of the upper body was slightly worrying. Still think it looks awesome though. I challenge ye faithful to disagree!!?
