South Bay Norton still selling exhausts for 961?

Hi Foster961 , If you are actually looking for an exhaust then the Norton Motad or Italian Zard is available. Both are expensive , but so is everything . The Zard may have better cornering clearance and chain clearance. I do not know anybody who has a Zard. Look it up on internet. The Zard required the replacement of the muffler mounting frame on the right side. This part comes with the exhaust when you buy it. If you are in to 2 into 1 systems this may be the one for you. Also John (G81CanCycle) was/is working on his own version of a 2 into 1. You may have seen it on the Access Norton forum last year. I am working on hard bags for the 961. I have a set of Viking Hard Bags that I want to mount. I will post when I finish. I like the system I have , Norton Motad short/loud w/decat X-pipe . The fit is good and so is the sound ! What has been an issue for others is touching down when leaned way over in a turn. If you are not experiencing this now then you are not leaning over far enough . This is OK.

Rumors are that Matt Capri shuttered his business on other forums. I can't be sure, but I lifted this from the Yelp site.

Aren't the shorties open like the long? I ordered them for my repairs but they are waiting for them at the factory. I'd go with the long open if it speeds things up. I'd like something at least as loud as my South Bay Norton pipes but not the open Mega if its like no pipes at all.

I would wait for the shorties . They may be more open than the long reverse cones.

Thanks Tony. Things are moving at a snails pace. They've had the bike for 2 months and are waiting for the parts. I emailed the factory and was told they are waiting for the tank. I told them to send what you have. My tank only has a little ding in it and I can wait. So I get an email telling me the tank is in " should I send all the parts or wait for the clutch cover and the silencers"?" Really??? Thought we were only waiting for a tank. :?

Hi all,

Just out of interest, do you have access to a custom motorcycle exhaust specialist. I am in Aus and had a brisbane based exhaust specialists modify my long standard pipes. They cut out the cats and welded in stainless straight through pipes. They removed the end cone, extracted all internal components and welded back the cone with a small pipe insert at the mouth of the silencers. Cost me very little, she sounds sweet and looks original. Open pipe map and she is running beautifully.

Food for thought.

Hi Steve
I'm in NSW and have the sport pipes but would love to have the exhaust note louder. Could please send me some more information or the exhaust shops details.

Thanks
Simon

G'Day Simon,

No problem mate. The man to speak to is Pete Turner, at Motorcycle Exhaust Professionals, Slack Creek QLD 07 38089377 - www.motorcycleexhaustprofessionals.com.au. Pete is great and he and his boys know everything there is to know about exhaust manufacture/modification.

My 961 Cafe Racer was the first 961 he had done. He worked on it for three hours and was not happy with the result so continued on until he got the exhaust note that he (and I) were satisfied with. Top bloke.

Previously, from new, my bike was difficult to start - at least three attempts needed before it would (sort of) idle. Even then I needed to caress the throttle for 5 mins or so until it would finally idle. Now with the exhaust modified and the open pipe map the bike starts first or second time and idles straight away. It pulls strongly throughout the rev range. My only observation is that is occasionally little hesitant in low gears at low revs. Maybe a little lean - not sure what I can do about it but will keep you informed.

Hope this helps.

Best regards,

Steve

Hi Paul,

I understand that there may be some baffling in the down pipes - he did not touch this as it was too difficult. Still sounds pretty sweet though, without being obnoxious.

G'Day Simon,

My Norton dealer Brisbane Motorcycles (Caboolture) fitted a new ECU when the original failed to accept the new open pipe map after the exhaust mod.

Best regards.

Steve

Hi Steve
The better start and rev behaviour would mainly be due to change of the OEM map and if at all only secondarily caused by the new pipe design.
Great that you found somebody to do this mods...
