Does anyone know if South Bay Norton is still selling exhaust systems for the 961? Email thru website is not working and phone number disconnected. Did they go out of business? Any other open exhaust options for USA?

Thanks,

Kevin

Kevin,

Just get the MOTADS from Norton. There are options, OPEN MEGAPHONE, Shorties, LONG OPEN and original quiet. The megaphones are insanely loud.

What number did you call?
I have matts personal cell number.
I agree, get the motad exhaust.

South Bay still have a website ? I would call the number listed there . 310-784-7693

I have recently sold my Café Racer, but kept the new Motad and South Bay exhaust.

PM me and we can chat.

I've called that number a few times. Only once successfully. I don't think the have staff that monitors the phones very well. I got M.C. on his cell phone on a dial back, but felt bad because he was driving. So good luck. Keep trying.

I called Matt Capris personal cell phone and he has not responded to my calls or text. Hope he's ok! I just purchased all my polished norton parts through him a few months ago. Matt and I talked on the phone pretty often since August and texted back and forth a few times a week until a month ago.

I second Richard.
I put the shortie Motads on and holy shit, it was a whole new world! I would stop trying to chase Capri and move on. I have Callum's email, he will get you sorted out and ship them to your house. It was super quick as well (they were on backorder, but that was only a two week delay, boom box was in my hands 3 days after he told me it was sent). It was nuts, I don't get eBay shipments that quick.

Also, I have tried to propose helping the US side of parts and service, but very little to no response on that end. They have been awesome to deal with on my issue, but I would love to help them on the US side and really excel customer service. Just my two cents if anyone is listening.

Thanks for all of the replies. I'm interested in the long open pipes on Norton's website, but I didn't think these could be brought into the USA? Like the raked look and sound of the SBN pipes, had the opportunity ride a 961 with these pipes. Not too crazy about placing an order online for the SBN pipes without speaking to someone directly at their store. My local dealer does not have a lot of info as they just started selling Nortons and I'm their first customer. I'll try Norton directly and see what they say about shipping pipes to the US.

Anybody running the long opens from Norton?

Kevin

Hello Richard-7 , That is good to know now. Because we both know this was not the case just a couple of years ago. I could only get the SBN exhaust through my dealer at that time. I am glad Norton is finally catching up and taking care of this. The other nice thing would be Race Kits for the 961 , something developed by the factory !! Just like in the old days Norton Factory provided Race Kits and instructions etc. They are such a small concern that everything seems to take ages to get going . Now that the V4 is here , the 961 will take a back seat for a while again. I hope the V4 is a success for them and I pray they get this right the first time !! When you drop that kind of coin on a high performance motorcycle , it has to deliver all of the goods .

Well, there is open pipes and maps from norton uk. Carbon wheels from norton uk. There is a one07 racing generator and wires from us. Not a bad start.

I think the V4 is going to be a boutique bike too. 40 to 55K ? An Aprilia RSV4 is 16K. I would however like to see more items available for the Norton. Three years and aftermarket manufacturers still haven't taken notice. Everything has to be measured and researched to make sure it will fit. But on the bright side, There's not much I would want to do to change it.

I feel, it's because there is no volume to make it worth it for aftermarket. There are many ideas we have but hard to justify when we wont sell enough to cover the costs to tool up. Believe me when I say that one07 is for fun. If it was to put food on the table, it wouldnt be around. And if it wasnt for the generous donations from you folks. There wouldnt be manuals either.

I haven't contacted southbay in a while over the exhaust situation but I never had any intentions of buying their exhaust. Knowing there was no proper way to tune the bike should it need to be lean/rich after installation plus the price in my opinion was insane when I could build it myself. Well, when I was piecing everything together with a new set of cones I contacted Cone engineering and was curios to know if they had any interest in building exhaust on a low production run. I said people will pay and told them of Southbay offering complete exhaust but they were to much in my opinion and maybe they could produce something as good for cheaper .I told them Southbay and an unreliable Norton factory was the only option. Guess who WAS making the exhaust for Southbay !?, Cone Engineering. Now being in a labor/material trade and being involved in a world of craftsman I quickly realized why the cost. He explained there is no real way to duplicate a set of pipes and continuously have good quality control on these bikes. I believe there was an issue with fitment and the only way to resolve it was to have the bike there that the exhaust was going on. He said mounting brackets could be as much as half an inch off from bike to bike, and quality control on the bikes was pretty bad in general(go figure). I believe it was just to much of a mess and there was no money to be made. So with the blending and polishing on top off the man hours to make it like every set was the only set plus cost mark up, you get the high price points. All this does leave room to question factory kits fitting on bikes without fitment issues(I've never read about any complaints) but I don't know maybe there's more to it. Either way I guess that's why Southbay may not offer the exhaust anymore.

That's interesting. My only complaint with the Motad pipes is the placement over the oil drain plug - they are not centered. But that may have to do with clearing the rear sprocket or something. Other than that mine seem fine.

Seems starange to me too about the fitment when most connection points could be slotted. He did say low production was a factor but seemed to put more stock in the fabrication issues. Oh well...

Hi Foster961 , If you are actually looking for an exhaust then the Norton Motad or Italian Zard is available. Both are expensive , but so is everything . The Zard may have better cornering clearance and chain clearance. I do not know anybody who has a Zard. Look it up on internet. The Zard required the replacement of the muffler mounting frame on the right side. This part comes with the exhaust when you buy it. If you are in to 2 into 1 systems this may be the one for you. Also John (G81CanCycle) was/is working on his own version of a 2 into 1. You may have seen it on the Access Norton forum last year. I am working on hard bags for the 961. I have a set of Viking Hard Bags that I want to mount. I will post when I finish. I like the system I have , Norton Motad short/loud w/decat X-pipe . The fit is good and so is the sound ! What has been an issue for others is touching down when leaned way over in a turn. If you are not experiencing this now then you are not leaning over far enough . This is OK.
