Slimline steering head bearings

When I stripped down my frame the head races were taper roller. They appear to be the same size as some ball races 6205 2RS that I have in stock - I’m pretty sure they’re what I used on my Commando

Can I replace the greasy roller bearings with the sealed ball races? The only minor consideration I have is the roller race is a press fit to the lower stem, then I’d fit the bearing to the stem, then ease the outer up into the frame. I have a pair of each in my stock.

Yes or no?

You'd need a spacer between sealed ball bearings or they bind.

The ball races would butt up to the inside of the frame where there’s a lip surely?

I use the sealed ballraces with the spacer. It’s fine.

I still don’t see why they need a spacer as once they’re inside the top and bottom of the headstock they can’t go anywhere

Cos when you torque the stem nut you’ll be loading the bearings.
