Great video! It was nice meeting you at the Bub event and look forward to seeing the bike run next year. Life is a short journey that we don't think much about until we lose a loved one, For me it was my mother she died at the young age of 55. Your finishing the bike and running it at Bonneville is so cool, Keep up the great work. And thanks for the very well done video, I love the music as Bad Company is still one of my favorite bands. Take care, Chuck.

Sorry we missed you at the BUB meet. I was there helping my friend Eric run his Guzzi-powered streamliner. Steve Maney came over to make up the rest of our 3-man crew. You'd have enjoyed talking to Steve about your Norton effort. He's now got the Bonneville bug, and is building a short stroke Commando engine built for the 650 cc class. We plan to put it into my featherbed race bike, after I do some El Mirage meets with the current 920 engine, and have Steve ride it at next year's BUB meet in the 650-M-PG class. If we have time, we might hook up the nitrous and also run the 650-M-PF class. Be fun if we could all pit together.

Ken

Oh man, I wish I would have known you were there, I am sure that we most likely saw each other not knowing who we were. We were hanging at Tom Mellor's camp and helping out a few that didn't have anyone with them.
I learned enough to be dangerous. I would love to pit with you next year. Couple pics attached, as you can see I will have to make the Norton a little bigger than Tom's 200mph Triumph.

Great to meet you as well Chuck! Did you happen to post any pics of the BUB's meet?

I think we did meet after all. I walked over to Tom's pit after he had done his 200+ mph record runs, but he wasn't there, I talked to a couple guys sitting there. I think they might have been your group. We were pitted fairly close to Tom, but a row back from him.

This is a picture of the Guzzi liner we were running. I'm the old guy in the hat on the right, and Steve Maney is on the left.

For those who haven't seen it already, I have to post this picture of Tom's bike and tow vehicle.

We had already left the day that Tom did his 200 mph run. You most likely talked to one of the sons of Tom's friend that ran the 750cc Triumph. I wish I would have met you. We will next year! I do remember seeing Steve running around but didn't talk to him.

Hey Ken,
Not sure if you saw my reply but do plan on being at this years event and would like to pit with your team.
Things are slowly coming together. We are making a gas and oil tank combo that will mount in the original gas tank position to make room for the exhaust to exit into the dead airspace behind the bike which will route behind the carbs and exit behind the seat. The rear sets and rear section is mounted and we will be fitting the fairing next weekend. Les has started on the motor with hopes to have it completed in March. We had the One Bike Show here this weekend but we have had been hit with bad weather so I wasn't able to make it.

Looking good. I still have work to do on my Norton, and don't know yet if we will be running with a 650 cc engine or the current 920, but we will definitely be at the BUB meet with it this year. Still trying to manage an El Mirage meet first to get the nitrous system sorted out.

Ken

Hey Ken, I"m still wide eye'd, teeth gritting, groin tensioned - reflecting on the crazy glee in your otherwise calm mature voice on the phone > talking about the *fun* you crave hanging on tucking down on a road racer Commando flicking on NOS power blast into 170's! When ya Smoking with Enthusiasm, people come from miles around to watch ya Burn!!! Same for Son of Eddie on a ride that Burt Munroe would love 5 min on.

Man, that's great! I've been trying for days to get this page to load, but AccessNorton doesn't work in Korea. I had to trick my ISP to think I'm in Germany. That bike is looking great!

Hi Ken,
I have been working crazy on the roller and just about have it completed. I hooked up the electronic speedo and tach setup and temp all in one by Vapor today. The Charlie Toy fairing that Tom sold me is finally completed with the belly pan attached. I made it out to the OMV meet in Corvallis last week and took the bike down by request of the Oregon Norton Club. There was a lot of interest and I enjoyed the conversations.

Can you please let me know what gearing you think I should start with on the primaries, counter and final gear? I am using a stock Atlas 4 speed transmission that my dad had rebuilt.
You sent me all your racing gearing back on 12/2012 but would like to get a starting point if possible. I currently have a 36 tooth sprocket on the clutch.

The bike should but out close to 70 HP and will turn to 10,500 RPM.
I still owe your buddy a T-Shirt...
Thank you,

Paul

+1 Looking good----thanks for taking the time to post the images----I'm stuck here at Bagram Air Field in Afghanistan for the next couple of months working on Blackhawks-----so I cherish these threads since I have no bike to ride here. thanks again and keep 'um coming :)

Looking good, Paul.

I'll have to add the Atlas primary gearing numbers to my spreadsheet before I can compare my gearing to yours. I'll do that in the next day or two and post some numbers. I assume you are using a standard Atlas chain primary. What engine and countershaft sprockets do you have available to use?

I just sent in my entry for the BUB meet a couple days ago, before the $50 off early bird deal closed. With the discount, the early entry fee is still $525, so I want to make sure a record is in reach to justify the cost. I've entered in the 1000-MPF (1000 cc modified pushrod fuel) class, where the current record is 140 mph. I think that is well within reach for a 920 on nitrous. If Steve gets his 650 engine together in time, we will switch the entry to him and the 650-MPG class, where the record is 120 mph, again well within reach. My friend Eric has also sent his entry in, so we will be taking two bikes to the salt, and then going on to run a bike in the AHRMA vintage races at Miller on the weekend. It's going to be a long week! Eric is still sorting out what bike to run. He will probably be running a Guzzi-powered special construction sidecar, using the engine out of the streamliner we ran last year. Should be fun. If we can all pit together it should be a real party!

My bike is close to ready. I'm re-configuring the nitrous electronics at the moment. I mounted them in front of the top triple clamp, and then realized they were blocking my sight line when tucked in, so I'm re-packaging the relays and such to mount them down a bit lower. I'll have some pictures to post soon.

Ken

Paul, I've started doing the data for an Atlas primary, and all I see for clutch sprockets is 43T for the Atlas and 42T for earlier twins. How did you manage a 36T clutch sprocket? For engine sprockets, it looks like they range from 17T to 22T, if you include pre-Atlas twins.

I just assumed it was 33 because my dad wrote 33t on the clutch it is a 43t clutch sprocket. We have a variety or primary sprockets. I am on a plane and have to run.

How's the program coming, Paul? I'm almost ready with my bike, but, unfortunately, Steve Maney will not be able to make it. He's been sick, and is still recovering and trying to catch up on his business backlog. He's still building the 650 engine, and we're planning for him to ride with it next year. This year I'll be riding with the 920 engine and nitrous. Looking forward to seeing you and your team there.

Ken

I am very hopeful and we are pushing to get the motor together. Run into a couple road blocks but back on track.
Waiting on the copper head gasket to show up the first set was not right should be in Tuesday.
Body work is painted ready to pick up in the morning.
Roller is at my buddy's fab shop fitting the custom tanks and welding a chain guard and a couple other things picking it up Friday night or Saturday morning.
Heading to Les Barkers Saturday to plumb all the oil lines and fuel lines
Packed my tool box tonight
It is racing and it always seems like everything is last minute...

I am planning on going and my Pops is watching over to insure we will be there!

If all works out I will be heading down next Friday. It has been in the 90's since last Saturday and looking at the forecast it will be 90 thru next Sunday so far.
Someone from the timing association is going to check the salt this weekend and have an answer on Monday.
