An interesting concept chaps. What is the consensus on its effectivity ?

There is a lot of innovative engineering on this engine that is "out of the box" shall we say. Jim

That is a very interesting engine no question. It will be fun to see how it makes out on the salt.
Keep on keepin on.
Cheers,
Tom

Next question Jim, What are the two screws for in the back of the crankcases below the barrels?

They are just plugging holes. I am not sure what the original idea of those holes was. Jim

For what it is worth and from recollection of either a discussion I had with Sir Eddy or from some thread I read I think there were plans for oil jets pointed to beneath the crowns of the pistons.

You are correct!
We have elected to run it without, may be something we look at adapting down the road.

It's looking better in mostly one piece.
I went ahead a got a new set of spiggoted lifters and ground them to the correct profile so I do not have to worry about loosing a Stelite.

Jim - Could you please clarify what a new set of spiggoted lifters are; stock or something else?

The new lifters from Andover are of an updated design.
The Stelite foot has a raised center that fits into the bottom of the lifter body and is brazed rather than just being brazed to the flat bottom of the body.
They are also 8 grams lighter.
You can tell if a lifter is of the spiggoted design by looking inside the lifter. You can see the weld where the Stelite joins the lifter body through the holes in the side. Jim

Jim,

I think this is the type of lifter I have fitted, I bought them from Norman White, fresh stock from AN around March 2014. Does that figure or are they newer than that?

Steve

I believe they have been available for several years now.

However I did buy a new set of lifters about a year ago from a well known dealer in the states and they were not of the spiggoted design. The could have easily been old stock or from a questionable source. Jim

Fantastic work for a great cause, Jim...congratulations!

Very impressed with the valvetrain job and the video above.
What are the springs you are using and would they work on 'standard' valves? (My 850 engine has lightened crankshaft and PW3 cams)...I recently floated valves at around 7700 Rpm on top at the end of the Dijon circuit straight in France, no big damage, I just had to replace the valves.

Keep up the great work!!!

Jim,
It Lives thanks to you, AMAZING. You have put your heart into this and I am so thankful. My Fathers dream was to develop a short stroke 500 and run it at the salt with the hopes of setting a record. I am so grateful and can say it wouldn't have happen without your knowledge and dedication. I am looking forward to running it down the salt with my father by my side.
This is now my dream and you have made it come true.
JIM COMSTOCK MADE IT HAPPEN!!!!

I can't hold back my emotions when I hear the roar of the motor. AMAZING!

THANK YOU!

That sounds impressive boys!

Doesn't sound anything like any 500cc Norton twin I've ever herd before !!

Bon chance.

Yeah Buddy, you boys got that bike barking and it looks like it's ready to take a bite out of Bonneville !

Hello all from sunny Devon UK.
Like others I'm so enjoying this thread and anyone who sees (and hears) the Youtube item may need their smile surgically removed!
What a heartwarming and worthwhile project.
All the best to all concerned.

When will the final decision be made if the bike runs this year?

This is so monumental, I would drive across the continent to be there. The pyramid of humanity and work that supports this project is off the scale. As long as a mans dreams are alive, he really hasn't left us.

BTW, Jim has a soul mate that supports his dreams. That allows the rest of us to share in his.

I has been decided -as of this morning.
The event has been cancelled for this year due to poor salt conditions. What a downer.
I guess we will be ready for next year. Jim

Wow, the thought was very exciting. On the list for next year. Be there or be square! The bike should be razor sharp by then.

Other venues maybe ?

What a bummer.

In the UK we have an organisation called the 'Land Speed Racing Association' that runs events at airfields in the UK.

Do you have similar in the US? I'm just thinking it would be great to at least run the bike and de-bug it etc so you can really be ready for next years proper event.

Better than it sitting in the garage for 12 months only to find a gremlin on the salt next year!

Bummer. I wonder if BMST will refund our entries in full, or some sort of partial refund, after deducting their expenses so far. Now to cancel all those hotel reservations! With our location here in SoCal, we still have the opportunity to run at El Mirage, and maybe next year the Mojave Mile event. There are still three El Mirage meets left this year, as long as they don't get rained out.

I'll be saving that bottle of Stranahan's for next year. I should be back with the Norton again by then, and if all goes well, we will be celebrating results from both teams.

Ken
