silly boyer ?

I have searched for this simple answer on several forums and have not found the answer. May seem silly, but I've wondered for a few years now.........Looking at the boyer rotor, which way do I turn it to advance and which way to retard.

This is not a silly question, as I got it wrong and resulted in a kickback which had me rolling around the garage floor for 10 mins, wimpering with the pain!!
Advanced means you are going further away from top dead centre.
So if you set a boyer system at 31 dbtdc (degrees before top dead centre) (which you do) then 1 degree advanced would be 32 dbtdc...ok?
Now remember you adjust the stator on slots to adjust the timing, not the rotor as you suggest.
So take the cover off the timing cover to expose the rotor stator of the boyer. Kick the bike over and observe which way it (the rotor) turns.
If it (the rotor) turns anticlockwise, then turning the stator anticlockwise will retard the ign.
If it (the rotor) turns clockwise, then turning the stator anticlockwise will advance the ign.
in other words, turning the stator in the same direction as the rotation of the rotor will retard, and in the opposite direction it will advance.
I must admit I cant remember which direction the rotor turns, I think it is anticlockwise, but it is simple as I state above to find out.
Make sure it is not too advanced, or you will end up like me, on the floor in agony!

Commando rotor turns anti (counter) clockwise.

Turn STATOR anti/counter-clockwise to RETARD, turn ROTOR clockwise to RETARD

Turn STATOR clockwise to ADVANCE, turn ROTOR anti/counter-clockwise to ADVANCE

Thanks a lot for the explanation. I 've instaslled several boyers and never bothered to pay attention to this when timing. Guess I'm always more concernded at getting the job done quickly so as not the run the bikes so hard while stationary. Paranoid about overheating them I guess.
