I have always used the Z plate and the Norton script on the timing case for alignment. Both match, horizontally, so I measure identically up from the upper edge of the Z plate onto the correctly set side cover then lay my true level guide strip. Then, from the timing case, the centerline of the Norton script up to the fully tightened down gas tank and again lay the guide strip. Next, and hopefully final, I check the horizontal of the two strips and if off, re-check my measurements. If unresolvable, I fudge both but often it is not noticeable.Good luck and show us the result please!
